posed to the heat wave, Delhi’s directorate of education (DoE) has advised private schools in the city to break for summer vacations from May 1 or 2. Though it’s up to individual institutions to decide on the issue, several schools announced on Thursday that they were advancing the summer break, at least for the primary classes, keeping the health of their students in mind.
DPS RK Puram said it was closing its primary section at East of Kailash for summer break from Friday and DPS Vasant Kunj announced suspension of primary classes from May 4. Birla Vidya Niketan at Pushp Vihar will close from May 9 instead of May 14, while at Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar, May 6 will be the last working day. Springdales School, Pusa Road will break for vacations from May 9.
Most of Delhi blacked out again
South, central and east Delhi suffered sevento eight-hour-long blackouts throughout Thursday, as powerstarved BSES had to resort to massive loadshedding. P 7 Most schools likely to advance break
New Delhi: In the wake of DoE advising private schools to break for summer vacations from May 1 or 2, schools which have not yet decided on re-scheduling their holidays insist that enough precautions are being taken to shield the students from the heat. Madhulika Sen, principal, Tagore International School, said, ‘‘We are not allowing students to go to the playground in the games period. They are being given indoor games instead. These days students do not have resistance to extreme weather since they always stay in airconditioned rooms and eat junk food.’’
Some schools are also changing their timings and shortening the morning assembly in view of the heat. Col Ramesh Laddha, director, Birla Vidya Niketan, said, ‘‘We now have the school assembly only three days a week at 7.30 in the morning. We have also planned to stop the games period as a short-term measure as it is really hot these days.’’
At DPS, Gurgaon, the day ends at 11.30am instead of 1pm these days to protect children from the midday heat. ‘‘However, there are no plans to prepone the summer vacation which are anyway starting on May 6 for junior classes and on May 15 for higher classes,’’ said principal Aditi Mishra.
Shyama Chona, principal, DPS R K Puram, said, ‘‘We have already closed the primary section. The summer vacations for the senior classes will also begin as early as possible. We have to adjust the number of working days before making an announcement regarding that.’’ The school was originally closing for vacations on May 15. More schools are likely to decide on advancing the summer vacations on Friday after they receive DoE’s notification. R C Shekhar, director, Gyan Bharati, Saket, said, ‘‘We have some unit tests lined up. So we still have to decide if we need to close down before May 15.’’ L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharti School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, also said that the school will wait for a couple of days before deciding on changing the vacation dates. ‘‘We may start the holidays early if the weather conditions do not improve. But nothing is decided,’’ Sehgal said.

ar-old, is anxiously waiting for the new year. It’s not a family gettogether or new year resolutions that she is looking forward to. She is getting ready for the nursery admissions slated to begin on January 1 in most schools in the capital. She says she has been preparing for last two months and has shortlisted eight schools for applying for her son’s admission,
“Thankfully, we will be off from work on January 1 since it’s a Saturday. We plan to apply in all schools in the vicinity offering online forms on the very first day. For other schools, my husband and I hope to take leave from work on different days to buy forms and submit them,” said Anjali, a resident of Vasant Kunj.
“It looked quite easy initially to find a nursery seat for my child. But then we realized how every school is going to have a different admission criterion. We did not study in a Delhi school and our son is our first child. So, we clearly lose points for alumni and siblings. We are just banking on the points for neighbourhood,” she added.
Jyoti Sharma, whose daughter is four years old, is worried that the admission to KG may be tougher. “We let our daughter continue in the play school last year. But now schools say that seats in KG are limited as children from nursery are directly promoted leaving a few seats vacant. I hope we get lucky this time,” she said.
Most schools like DPS, Amity International, Sanskriti, Tagore International, Laxman Public, will start their admission process from January 1 while others like Springdales and Mount Carmel are scheduled to start the sale of forms from January 3.
Schools say that even though the vacations might continue for children, offices will remain open for the sale and collection of forms. Principals suggested that parents should go through the admission parameters of individual schools to know their child’s chances of getting through. As per the guidelines of the directorate of education, no school can keep discriminatory points for admission.
Speaking to Times City, state education minister Arvinder Singh insisted that DoE would ensure that all schools follow a fair and just admission procedure. “A school can fix criteria for admission as per its philosophy and objective. But our officials are keeping an eye on the parameters of individual schools and any violation will be checked,” Singh said.
Parents are free to decide against buying the prospectus of schools if they find them expensive. According to DoE, a school cannot force parents to buy the prospectus with the admission form though it’s an individual choice as it contains information about the school.
Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School, said, “Buying the prospectus is not compulsory but it is advisable as it contains all the information about preschool admissions, method of teaching and the fee structure. One can buy the prospectus if one shows an interest in the school. We do not hand it out to parents when they come to buy the form but only during submission of the form. ”

ve either set aside a sizeable chunk of seats or accorded maximum number of points for the sibling criterion. The Shri Ram School has, in fact, gone a step further and allowed parents who already have children studying in either of its two branches to register for admission before everyone else. The school reached out to the parents through bulk SMSes on Wednesday. The parents were asked to write to the school in case they wished to apply to the Aravali branch. The same will be done for the junior wing in Vasant Vihar soon. “ We want to ascertain how many sibling cases will apply to our schools since we want to give them preference. Last year, we had a lot of sibling cases and they had to be accommodated under the management quota. We want to be prepared this time,” Manju Bharat Ram, chairperson of the trust that runs the Shri Ram Schools, said. Some other sought- after schools have ranked the sibling category just after neighbourhood in importance. The Delhi Public School in Rohini has accorded 25 points each to sibling and neighbourhood categories. The Ahlcon International School in Mayur Vihar and the Bal Bharati Public School on Ganga Ram Hospital Marg have set aside 25 and 20 points respectively for the sibling category as against 30 points for neighbourhood. “ Parents suffer a lot if their children go to two different schools. The biggest problem is the clash of school timings. Picking up and dropping the children become a nightmare. So, such applicants needs preference,” Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery. com, said. “ Sibling will be a very important ingredient of our admission policy, too, as it keeps parents’ convenience in mind,” Jyoti Bose, principal of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, said. NOTICE TO GOVT The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a response from the city government on a PIL seeking quashing of nursery admission guidelines framed by it. A division bench of chief justice Dipak Misra and justice Manmohan also issued notice to the Centre and asked them to file their reply within six weeks. The PIL was filed by NGO Social Jurist. Its lawyer Ashok Agarwal said the guidelines giving private schools a free hand to formulate their own admission criteria violated the Right to Education Act.…

Subject- More Than 50 Schools flouting RTE/Nursery Admission Guidelines
Respected Sir
This is the first time i am writing letter to Dir (DOE) after seeing the steps taken by you against the Erring Schools in last 10 -15 days. I am so positive and optimistic after seeing your approach which make me feel if you look after this position for next 2-3 years the MISSION NURSERY ADMISSION would just be a simple school admission process for parents.
Sir..I am giving you list of around 50 prominent schools recognized under DOE which are openly flouting RTE and DOE guidelines and for reference i am attaching excel sheet also in this mail only (also your staff can check on respective website or forms)
My questions for which i need confirmation from your side ( i don't mean you need to ans me but are schools right in doing so )
1 Does DELHI EDUCATION ACT Says that Min entry level age for Nursery is 3yrs 6month and no DOE circular cannot supersede it .
( Statement given by Mt Carmel Principal Mr V K Williams In Hindustan Times on Monday as they are taking min 3yrs 6month entry level in Nursery) Link given below
http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Mt-Carmel-s-move-to-raise-age-limit-triggers-row/Article1-985970.aspx
2 When DOE has fixed Min age criteria of 3yrs with no upper age cut off . Do schools have power to fix upper cut off ....can schools give more points to children on the basis of age
Schools like Ahlcon Public School (Mayur Vihar),Srijan (Model Town), Shriram (Vasant Vihar)
3 Do we have any law which states that you need to own the house, for getting admission in a school and leave the school if your house does not fall in the bus route - Pleases see undertaking being taken by parents attached from MOTHER'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (AUROBINDO MARG) ?
form%20of%20mothers%20with%20house%20ownership%20clause-2%281%29.doc_
4 Yes i agree Documentation is a problem for address proof and if we fix some standard documents to be acceptable by all the schools in delhi and ( Keeping in mind tenants /transfer cases) Also give power to schools to take punitive action in case the document are are found false

r admission criteria. While most schools are following the usual point system, many have switched to a draw of lots.
Parents of three-year-olds say they are keeping tabs on the criteria to prepare for the stiff 'competition' for a nursery seat. Many parents TOI spoke to shared that they had been preparing for the past few weeks by doing a recce of schools, regularly scanning schools' websites, and by reading about the 'struggle' of parents who got their kids admitted last year.
"I have been doing research on the best schools for my son. I have visited 16-17 schools in west Delhi to meet the teachers, see the facilities and check out the classrooms. I realized that several schools that I was keen on were not so welcoming. I also found many good schools which were not even on my wish list," said Ishita Sengupta, who lives in Dwarka.
for quite some time."I have been doing research on the best schools for my son. I have visited 16-17 schools in west Delhi to meet the teachers, see the facilities and check out the classrooms. I realized that several schools that I was keen on were not so welcoming. I also found many good schools which were not even on my wish list," said Ishita Sengupta, who lives in Dwarka.
Another parent, Anjali Bhardwaj, from Vasant Kunj has been working on an excel sheet (Made By AdmissionsNursery.Com) for quite some time. "After my son had slept, I scanned the websites of schools for their parameters last year. I have a list of parameters ready for reference," she said while adding that she plans to apply to as many schools as possible.
While schools like Springdales and Ahlcon International have already released their parameters, Delhi Public School, Vasant Valley School and Mother's International School are likely to come out with their admission criteria by January 1. "We will announce our admission criteria on January 1. Parents will be allowed to apply online with no registration fee," said D R Saini, principal, DPS R K Puram. Tagore International School at Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash will admit children on the basis of a draw of lots, while Bal Bharati School at Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, Amity International and Apeejay School have decided to allocate a fixed number of seats for alumni, sibling, neighbourhood besides other categories. D K Bedi, principal, Apewjay School, Pitampura said, "Parents should not panic. They should wait for the second list if they don't make it in the first."

New Delhi With nursery admissions set to start from January 2 next year, many schools have come out with interesting criteria for choosing candidates.
Cambridge School, New Friends Colony, is awarding points to children whose parents hail from intercultural backgrounds. This, according to the school’s administrative officer, is part of the institution’s efforts to promote “cultural integration”. The school will also give extra points to children with special needs, as well as those who have physically challenged parents. Parents with special achievements will win five additional points for their children.
Springdales School will give extra points to children belonging to minorities. The school’s admission notice reads: “In keeping with our ethos and objectives, we will embrace a diverse mix of children from different communities, religions, regions, and linguistic groups. Aspirants must provide authentic proof that they qualify to be minorities, as defined by authorised bodies such as the Minorities Commission.”
The school will award the most points to people in the sibling (30) and alumni (25) criteria. This is still lower than last years’ 35 points awarded to children of the alumni. Also, first-born children will get 10 points at Springdales.
Children, whose parents are serving in civil and allied services/armed forces, will get 20 points (10 for each parent) in DPS RK Puram.
Even though many parents and some schools under the banner of the Delhi State Private Schools Management Association had written to the directorate, seeking scrapping of the sibling and alumni criteria, they figure prominently in the points’ breakdown of schools that have announced admissions so far.
However, the number of points allotted to the criteria has come down, Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, said. “Last year, schools were awarding anywhere between 25 and 35 points for each of these criteria.”>
Schools such as St Mary’s and Mount Carmel are not giving any points to the girl child this year. Another school, however, will award eight points to the first-born girl child and 10 to the first-born boy. A particular school is offering five points for the adopted girl child, and two for the adopted boy.
Some schools such as Bal Bharti, Tagore International and Mount Carmel have done away with the points system, and are opting for a draw of lots instead.…
