Some schools in Gurgaon have started nursery admission in a departure from the schedule followed last year, leaving parents confused. The admission process, which usually commences around mid-August, has already started in some schools and others are also expected to start the process soon. Parents complain that absence of an academic calendar for schools in Gurgaon is causing them troubles.
Schools such as The HDFC School, The Millennium School, Delhi Public School Sushant Lok, Lotus Valley International School and Kunskapskollan have already started their admission process. Scottish High International will open the registration process on August 1. Other schools, including DPS Sector 45 and Ryan International School, are also likely to start the process by mid-August.
“I am frazzled by the education system here. My family shifted to the city recently and I have been hooked to all social networking sites for information about school admissions. The schedules of two of my preferred schools are poles apart. I am confused,” said Naina Raj, a parent.
Parents said absence of an academic calendar is affecting their choice of school.
“I want my child to study under the ICSE board. The school should provide an environment for my child’s overall development but also ensure that the studies are not compromised with. But how can a school fulfil all these needs? With no academic calendar and fixed number of seats in schools, my child will have to make compromises,” said Priyanka Dubey, another parent
Education experts suggest that the early start of admission by some schools is due to growing competition among them.
“Every year, more and more schools with better infrastructure and technology come up in Gurgaon. These institutes give a strong competition to the existing ones, which is why schools want to start admission before others,” Sumit Vohra, founder of admisssionnursery.com.
Schools, meanwhile, say that they have started early admission to give more time to the parents to complete the formalities.
“We are commencing the admission process early so that the parents can fill the forms easily and submit them. For the comfort of the parents, the school is providing forms both offline and online,” said Sudha Gupta, principal, Scottish High International School.
Aditi Misra, principal of Delhi Public School Sector 45, said, “We will start admissions by the first week of August. The admissions will be done on the basis of draw of lots.”

very much/ approachable from my residence. I am confused ( May be like other parents) on the following issues : 1) Few of the Schools like GD Goenka -Sector 48, Amity Group, Ridge Valley are having the cut of age of 3+ Yrs ( As on 31March /1st April 2015 )For Nursery Admission and child will reach to class 1 in 5 yrs of age while the reputed school like Shriram, DPS-45, Sun World, Lotus Valley and New HDFC school etc are having 3.5 yrs/4+ criteria - so the child ( falling under my category 3+ yrs on a march 31 2015 ) have the two options - 1) get the admission in nursery to school following 3+ criteria or wait for complete 1 year for getting in good school Shriram etc. The former save ONE crucial year in child's life which can help in long run while child is preparing for competitive exams like IIT/ AIIMS or Commerce as child is ONE year ahead in academics. However the risk is the basic foundation of the child as the credentials of school who are accepting 3+ are not yet fully established - I am totally confused on this - May share your view/ perspective 2) how you rank the schools GD Goenka, Amity Group ( sector 43,46,Amity Global,Amity international),ridge Valley, Pathways, Millennium or any other school in ur opinion following 3+ criteria- by reading the threads I think GD Goenka is best ??? 3) If I decide to wait for a year then what are the pre school/ play school you recommends ( ranking)for my child - The Shriram Early Years,Pathways, GD Goenks, Lotus Valley, The Shriram GLOBAL pre, Pumpkin House, DPS sector 45, GEMS Modern Academy,Sunworld, Anand, Pallavan, mother's pride - galleria or Sushant apartment),Pumpkin House,Medhan,I Discoveri XSEEd,Modern Montessori International, DLF Phase I - request to share views/ opinion pl…

iform admission criteria in schools. With no state-prescribed rules for nursery admissions, the schools take the liberty of framing their own rules. Though most prefer to shortlist on the basis of a points-based system, some use the lottery, while a few also screen students. Ajay Aggarwal, a resident of South City II seeking admission for his three-year-old, says, "While I will apply to all schools in the neighourhood, where we'll score higher because of proximity, I'm worried because some might have other criteria such as first-come-first-served, or lottery." Principals of city schools believe the points-based system is the best. "No one is prohibited from adopting a method of their choice. But we should strive to use the best system available. The points-based system is fair, as kids staying in the neighbourhood stand a better chance over others," says Anita Makkar, principal of HDFC school, Sector 57. She adds, "Screening is unfair as kids are too small to be interviewed. And it's inappropriate to interview parents about their bank balance or qualifications." Savinder Kaur Rooprai, the headmistress of Salwan Public School in Sector 15, says, "There has to be a way of shortlisting candidates. When we receive 500 applications for a mere 90 seats, we can be fair only on the basis of a points-based system." Sudha Goyal, director of Scottish High International School, which admits students on a first-come-first-served basis, says, "We are open to all candidates. But we only expect interested parents to personally approach the school and apply. Ones who come first are given preference." Sumit Vohra, founder of a virtual platform for nursery admissions (http://admissionsnursery.com), says, "Though RTE rules don't apply to nursery admissions and hence, technically, schools may not be prohibited from screening students, but since most students continue to study in the same school, the RTE prohibition on screening for selection is rendered meaningless if it is not applicable for nursery admissions." Education being a concurrent subject, state rules override national ones. And Haryana rules are stricter. "The state rules clearly prohibit schools from screening parents or students, while short listing for nursery classes," says district elementary education officer Prem Lata Yadav. Are Gurgaon's schools hearing?

f getting selected for admission in many schools. "In one school, I noticed that all candidates selected in the final list stay within a radius of 5 km of the school. Why then do they even accept applications from those who stay 12-13 km away?" asked Vijay Sharma, a parent who lives in Palam Vihar. Sonia Aggarwal, an IT professional, said, "I bought the admission form of this school for Rs 1,000, but it was turned down when I submitted it." Similarly, my friends applied at 3-4 schools and got selected nowhere. Why should we spend so much money on just the application process when the final outcome comes to a naught?" The practice of selling admission prospectus at exorbitant rates stems from the lack of regulations in Gurgaon. In Delhi, no school can force applicants to buy prospectus, while an admission form doesn't cost more than Rs 25. "In absence of any regulatory body in Gurgaon, there are no fixed charges for nursery admission forms. We have seen schools change rules midway after selling the forms. In Delhi, no school can sell the form for more than Rs 25, while the price of prospectus varies between Rs 100 and Rs 300 and that too is optional. But in Gurgaon, when the school does not disclose the criteria earlier, why are they selling the forms at this high price?" said Sumit Vohra, who runs an online portal — admissionsnursery.com — a platform for the admission seekers. School authorities, however, say the allegation by parents is a bit of an exaggeration. While most schools admit there is no criteria for buying a form, they disagree that it's done to sell "expensive prospectus". Schools in Gurgaon claim it is done to provide equal opportunity to all parents. Anita Makkar, principal of HDFC School, said, "We follow a points-based system. Candidates who live far off will surely score less than those who stay close by, but we can't deny the former an opportunity to vie for getting shortlisted." Sudha Goel, director of Scottish High International School, said, "We sell forms for Rs 2,000 that includes a CD, brochure and prospectus. But if the number of forms we sell exceeds the number of seats, we inform parents the chances of their wards getting selected is grim." Anjali Nagpal, principal of Blue Bells School in Sector 10, said, "We never say 'no' at the time of selling forms except in the cases when the child's age is less than the minimum threshold."
