Parents write to DoE, seek changes in nursery criteria

After schools, it was the parents’ turn to write to the Directorate of Education (DoE) with suggestions on the nursery admission guidelines for the next session.

According to the proposed admission criteria, distance should be among the most important criteria but in a staggered way.

“Preference should be given to a child who stays near the school. There can be different points for different categories such as 0-3 kilometres, 3-6 kilometres, 6-9 kilometres and so on. Points can decrease as distance increases,” the letter sent to the DoE states.

The letter also suggests that points should be given to children of parents who stay in areas where there aren’t any good schools and if they agree to pick and drop their child to school.

According to Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, the suggestions have been collected from members over three months.

The parent community has come out against points for children of alumni as they feel it is an unfair advantage. “There should be no points or quota for alumni, otherwise all first-borns will be left out,” the letter states.

The issue is a controversial one as critics argue that alumni points make it easier for influential people to get their children admitted in the same school. Others argue that if high alumni points are accorded, only children with an older siblings or alumni parents can make it to the list.

The parents’ body has also suggested that if points for alumni are being given, equal points should be given to the first child as well and those using alumni points should not be given this advantage.

Instead of extra points for girls, the body states that there could be a 5% quota. It also suggests that seats be reserved for differently abled children.

“We are aware that no criteria can satisfy all parents. The problem is clearly of supply and demand. Unless the number of seats and schools is increased and government schools are upgraded, these problems will persist,” said Vohra.

Respected Mam

We all are well aware what happened last year.As we have been advocating for Centralized Admission System since 2011 but as we came to know that DOE is planning to start Nursery Admissions for 2015-2016 early this year and CAS cannot be implemented in such a short notice.
We are biggest parent community in Delhi /India and after consulting /brainstorming with  the parents community of 75 k parents  for 3 months we have arrived on the point system (Admission Criteria) for 2015-2016 from Nursery to Grade 1 ( 3 yrs- 6 yrs) which will treat everyone at par with no preference or advantage to anyone . We would also suggest that you also make criteria  for 6-14 years (Under RTE) as many schools do screening in absence of any fixed guidelines.

Upper age cut off limit should also be  fixed and not made school specific . So that every school follows Uniform policy .

As schools are not distributed equally we have proposed concept of safe transport in the point systems below that was suggested in Ganguly committe but no school implemented it
Please find below the proposed admission criteria what parents want !!

1 Distance point on staggered way upto 12 or 15 km

2 Preference should be given to person staying near the school ( 0-3/3-6/6-9 ) Points can decrease with increase in distance.

3 Safe transport - Any parents staying in (Dabri/ Sarita vihar /Khichripur / Chattarpur or any area which does not have good schools) in delhi can get  points if he gives undertaking that he will drop and fetch his ward for 14 years.(Was proposed in Ganguly Committee)

4 No points or quota to alumni else same story will be repeated in all old schools ( All first born would be left out in old schools)
if school wish to give any points to alumni it should be equal to first child point (mandatory) ( but Alumni case can avail only Alumni points even they have first child points )

5  Girls and  boys  treated at par in all metros (yes very good policy for remote places  or villages) .No extra point for girl child,Else boys will be at disadvantage (Max 5% quota for girl child if society demands )

6 Some % of seats should be fixed for children with special needs and school staff (As per HC order for children with special needs )

7 Cap on sibling can only be put only if no points to alumni or first child case  else sibling cases would be at disadvantage and left over siblings will not get seat in any other school.

8  LEFT OUT SIBLING SHOULD BE GIVEN PREFERENCE IN KG ( In case any cap on sibling  is put )

as for the reservations 5% girl child
5% staff
5% alumni (so that "influential" alumni could get easy admission otherwise they will uproot the admission process by litigations like last yr!)
5% for the differently abled
25% EWS
=TOTAL 45% RESERVED AND 55% for GENERAL CATEGORY

alumni should go totally

sibling points should be there but not 20. it should be 10 points.

0-3 kms 80 points, 3-6 70 points 6-9 60 points and 9-12 50 points. no admission allowed beyond 12 kms as it is already too much of travel for small children but it will allow travel with earlier admitted siblings!

5 points for the first born child

and lastly 5 points for delhi based for more than 5 yrs! (giving preference to delhi ppl not outsiders, nahi to dilli wale bechare jayenge kahan? NCR? aur NCR wale dilli ayenge... what a shame!)
