Bollywood’s China story does not seem to stop surprising the Indian film industry as new releases in the neighbouring country’s market continue to make big bucks. This time, it is Irrfan Khan and Pakistani actor Saba Qamar-starrer Hindi Medium that released in Chinese theatres on April 4.

The film, which is a satirical take on the Indian education system, earned Rs 63 crore on its home turf and is now taking the Chinese box office by storm. Moviegoers in China were so pumped about Hindi Medium that the film made Rs 5.30 crore in ticket sales, tweeted film trade analyst Ramesh Bala.

The film had considerable competition from big-budget Hollywood films like Ready Player One but it stood strong at the box office.

Hindi Medium began its China journey with an opening figure of Rs 24.86 crore and in two days the film amassed Rs 50 crore with day 2 earnings at Rs Rs 41.15 crore. By the third day, Hindi Medium left the Rs 100 crore mark in the dust after it collected Rs 39.51 crore, taking the China collections to approximately Rs 102.29 crore.

Another Khan is impressing the Chinese audience with his performance so much so that Hindi Medium’s show count was as high as 50,000 shows, better than Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which released in China on March 2.

Over the weekend, the Irrfan Khan-starrer added Rs 36.37 crore to its kitty and took the 5-day total to Rs 138.66 crore inching close to Rs 150 crore target. However, the real test of a film begins with the start of weekdays when people are off to work. And the film started its second week with collections worth Rs 8.43 crore and in six days the film grossed Rs 44.26 crore in China and surpassed Rs 150 crore by making Rs 182.92 crore during its two-week run in the China circle.

However, Hindi Medium has lost steam post the release of Dwayne Jhonson’s Rampage that made a muscular debut in China with collections worth Rs 359.78 crore.

The worldwide story

But it is not just China where Indian films are spreading their magic. After a strong run in China, Secret Superstar is minting gold in Hong Kong where the film released on April 12. Pundit Taran Adarsh tweeted that the Zaira Wasim-starrer has collected Rs 3.46 crore from 118 locations in Hong Kong including the revenue earned from preview screenings of the film,  which comes upto Rs 55.71 lakh. On the fourth day of its run, Secret Superstar has taken its total to Rs 4.28 crore.
