HINDUSTAN TIMES~NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s nursery helpline has started ringing even before the admission season starts.
AJAY AGGARWAL/HT FILE The nursery admission process in the Capital will start on January 16. Forms will be on sale till January 31.

On Tuesday, a day after it was inaugurated, the helpline received 1,919 calls. On Monday, 1,724 calls were received. Most of calls were from people who wanted information on the new points system and admission schedule.

According to the Directorate of Education (DOE), of the 1,919 calls received on Tuesday, 708 were ‘resolved’. The individuals who called with complaints have been sent messages, saying that their complaints had been lodged and a solution would be provided within three days.

A complaint number has been provided and people have been asked to check the status of the complaint online.

“I have complained against a school starting the sale of forms before the declared date. The school is also forcing parents to buy a ` 500 prospectus along with the form. I have been informed that the complaint will be addressed within three days. I was satisfied with the process,” said a parent.

Others, meanwhile, said that the information being provided on the helpline was incorrect.

“I had called the helpline to find out when the forms would be available and was informed that they would go on sale from Wednesday. This despite the fact that the directorate had already deferred the process indefinitely,” said Kavita De, a parent.

The DOE, meanwhile, said that the sale of forms will now begin on January 16. The rest of the schedule will remain the same.

The Delhi High Court will hear the matter regarding the admission guidelines released by the L-G on Wednesday. The court’s verdict will decide the final guidelines as schools have said that the government has no right to take away the autonomy of private unaided schools.

“The confusion is making parents paranoid. As it is the process is starting late this year. Along with the uncertainty in dates, the confusion regarding the points system is also unnerving,” said Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com, a portal for parents.

Tiny change in nursery schedule triggers panic

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: The Directorate of Education has announced that nursery admissions will begin only a day late, on January 16, but even this slight delay sent alarm bells ringing. Parents scrambled to cancel leave, apply again and alter travel plans. Nursery admissions is serious business and involve weeks of careful planning. Even the new date failed to pacify some parents as the final schedule and criteria are still contingent on the outcome of the court case, which will be heard on January 15.
“I had taken some days off to complete the process,” says Vivek Kalra who is hoping to admit his daughter this session, “Changing dates last minute is a bad idea.”
Posts on many schools’ websites still say that admissions begin on January 15.
Parents had clearly not been expecting the postponement and most were certain that the decision would be in favour of the Lieutenant Governor on whose order the new guidelines are based. They are not so sure any more. “I was happy with the new guidelines and am hoping the court will decide in favour of the parents,” says Shivani Khurana whose twin boys will be joining school this year. The list of FAQs (frequently asked questions) released by the DoE states that twins will get sibling points (20, assuming the new guidelines prevail). It also state categorically that “so far, no maximum age limit has been fixed by the government”.
“The guidelines should be fixed and reviewed every few years. At least that way, there won’t be as much confusion and parents will know when to expect change,” says Tarunjit Singh. Even a day’s delay causes disruption. “We don’t apply to just one school but several and we can’t tell our bosses that we’ll come
late every day. Official and family travel have been planned accordingly and my wife, who’s coming from Chandigarh, and I have had to work out which areas each of us will cover,” he says, adding that the websites of many schools don’t clarify if their admission process is online or offline. “I fear that admissions will start later still,” says Khurana.
Matters may have been simpler if the helpline attendants knew of the change but apparently they didn’t get that memo. At least one caller was told admissions were starting on Janaury 15. The helpline received 1919 calls on Tuesday; and 708 complaints have been resolved.
