Why so much hue and cry now?? No one spoke when the admission criteria was issued

STATESMAN 10 MAR Parents are requested to read comments first and see last 3 year history and then comment

I feel we Indians have a peculiar problem of getting into blame game.. Right now I am doing the same by blaming everyone :)

When the admission criteria was announced, no one uttered a word and everyone went ahead and filled applications.. As the results dates came closer, each criteria was discussed and everyone had his or her version for each criteria (obviously as per individuals comfort level). Bottom line is everyone wants the criteria as per his or her liking.. We have created the mess and not the government. At the end it is some or the other kid in question and someone will have to accept the fact.. Rules can't be customized as per everyone's liking.

Will just park few thoughts (For reference):

1) Neighborhood - I stay 20 KM away from DPS RK Puram or Vasant Kunj? Should I file a case on grounds of equality and my right etc that I should also get equal chance to get admission in this school and all other reasons? Many more reasons for each parent.

2) Transfer - So one who has spent entire life in Delhi, should they shift to other states for admissions as migrants are getting additional points? Many more reasons can be given.

3) Alumni - I wonder if it is the fight for very good 'popular' schools or average schools.. Will anyone raise questions for normal schools?

4) Siblings - Basis arguments discussed on Forum of dynastic etc, Alumni makes it dynastic but sibling doesn't for future?

What I feel is everyone has their own versions depending on their fulfillment of criteria.

What's disappointing is we have created a mess. It is the shortsighted parents who wake up when they find their kid may not get admission in this list and few parents supporting such issues.

AS A PARENT WHEN THE CRITERIA WAS ANNOUNCED, WHERE WERE THESE PARENTS TO RAISE QUESTIONS?? NOW WASTAGE OF 1 MONTH IS TAKEN AS 'NOT A BIG DEAL' FOR SOME PARENTS.

I have also applied for 20 plus schools and have not got admission for my son anywhere. But this mess created by SO CALLED INTELLECTUAL PARENTS is not taking it anywhere..

AND I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THE COMPETENCY OF GOVT WHO ARE MAKING RANDOM DECISIONS..

IT MAY HAPPEN THAT THE WAY OUR GOVT WILL ISSUE NOTICE THAT THOSE WHO DID NOT GET ADMISSIONS ANYWHERE WILL BE GIVEN ADMISSIONS IN THE BEST SCHOOLS OF DELHI... :)

I completely agree, Vineet. All these have delayed the admission process. We, whose parents are working, will suffer with this delayin admission. If the session will start in May, the vacations willg et started after 15 days & our children will not be adjusted in the school by that time. Parents - Pls lets go on the process.

Dear Sir/Madam

Good to say and tough to walk on , someone said Ekla Chalo Ekla Chalo but have confidence once convince.

I mile further what if I say I wrote and touched Lt Governor and his secretory panel not interested to take it up with LG and says clearly if you want review go to Court to challenge it .

As per me following should be only criteria

1) Distance wise weightage as per neighbourhood a) 0- 2.5 Km b) 2.5 TO 5 Km c) 5 To 10 KM

2) Siblings going to school presently 25 % seats only rest come to general draw if not get in this quota

3) Girls of EWS only 5%- 10%

Rest all is rubbish

I applied for 10 Schools - Have only son child .

still going on to hunt for school

@ shruti...

Thats true ,its chaos but you have to analyze what is good and true system? you just cant blame anyone.  First of all, this is all a game of demand and supply. Very few good schools(definition of a good school: its a different matter.)

Secondly, in India or anywhere else, when anyone has a great following like in this case 'few good schools' have about thousands of application for about hundred seats, they get unruly and then values take a backseat and here comes the largest player "MONEY". Now, like everyone else these prestigious schools go with the easier way, admitting sons and daughters of rich and filthy rich guys. or you can say a school becomes prestigious where these rich and super rich people get their kids admitted.

Now, as India is still a democracy(literally), seeing this discrimination, govt. came into play for the good of many. These schools get a huge discounts from the govt. hence they are asked to admit some not so rich people to their schools. This is good but is it so??? These schools lay down strange and stringent rules so that their motive of admitting only rich guys should not get altered. After this, some people aware of this discrimination went to court and  ask them for justice, resulting in the formation of "POINTS SYSTEM", which is said to be the most transparent way of admission and then pure luck " Draw of Lots".

So, Ms Shruti dont blame the system, its made for the good, but again in India we dont see the motive behind any law, the only motive is to give "EQUAL CHANCE TO EVERY ONE".

In my view, regarding admissions of 3 year olds, the only fair competition is pure luck "DRAW OF LOTS" for everyone.

Now, the question arises which is good school. As of now, a good school is a 'name' of the school which we can say proudly in front of our known and unknown and hear people say "how lucky".

Another question is "what schools do???" Apart from the academics which all schools promote are the values, an environment for the kids to create and grow and help them to become an individual to do something original in this world, where  our govt. schools heavily lack.

Please mam, this is not the matter of convenience or hassles, as Hon. High Court Judge Manmohan describes in his order "this is a matter of everyone getting equal opportunity."

Dear All,

It is really sad that we are still trying to justify our stand of points system and criteria. Everyone knows existing infrastructure and other problems but it will be better if we channelise our energy and ensure smooth process than trying to justify MY CRITERIA. We can have infinite criterias if a discussion on criteria is opened. Isnt it?

It's like India went out in the 1st round of World Cup itself and then blamed the format.

All I am trying to say is that at the end of it someone's kid will get admission. All we are doing is making a mockery of everything.

I still fell we are trying to over justify our point.

Rgds

@ shruti!!

this is not a mockery mam! and about someone's kid getting admission....mam!! when any school takes hefty donations in lieu of seats, thats also someone's kid.. this means that we should not talk or take steps to erase the injustice... mam !! this is not rational thinking....India losing in the first round of world cup is acceptable..thats because India didnt played well... but this is like thrown out without being played....and thats injustice. just think over it....

I think we had a healthy discussion thanks to Shruti who thought in a rational way and Tarun as well.

I am a parent whose child was selected in two reputed schools in the 1st as well as the 2nd draw of 70 pointers i.e. post 27/02/2014, but now have lost both the seats.

I am willing to go for the redraw again as directed by HC fully knowing that I might not get a chance again in those or any other schools of my choice but still the only thing I expect is that at least the DOLs should be held in fair and transparent manner.

Now just securing ONE seat in ANY school has become an issue. Where is the question of Top School? Even average /above average schools have 3500 applications. Do you expect a child will have probabilities that she/he gets one? Thanks to our Education Ministry and policies and much lesser number of schools, children's career is decided by lottery.

what i feel is there should not be quota beyond 50%. Rest 50% seats in all school should be kept free for draw.

I understand that the parents started making hue and cry only after the fraudulent applications by transfer cases came in the limelight. Nobody knew beforehand that unscrupulous people will twist the guidelines according to their whims and fancies. Only once the DoL came out and most of them were filled by so called transfer cases, without the 70 pointers even being included in Draws that people came to realize what was actually happening. How do you suppose parents to anticipate that people will make fraudulent attempts to garner seats by getting fake transfer or EWS certificates and deprive the genuine people from a fair draw. Your logic that people only started making hue and cry only later has no standing as even you would not have knowthegravity of situation till the time DoL lista started coming out.

As an end me and even entire parent community is talking about the same thing, that is closer of the admission process so that the kid can take first step towards the future and parents get back to day to day life. Only point of difference is the way towards that end.

There could be one way, that is let WHATEVER is happening to happen, just let the process to end without being much concerned about the ways and methods.

Other way could be, to look at the pros and cons of things, be mindful about the end but also looking at the path leading there, and evaluate things basis merit and logic. Also, discuss the situation with community, exchange ideas, and be vocal within a civil way.

Evidently, I am follower of the second path. To me, nursery admission is not a 100 meter dash it’s starting of the marathon race for the kid and for the parents. Few months here or there makes difference but not as much the spoiled entire school years.

Thanks

yes !! thats the right way of thinking.....

Let me try to draw a parallel for someone who used an example of India losing in the first round and blaming the format.

To me India is right in complaining about the format if the situation is that the other party gets 200 runs on the score board well in advance the moment the first batsman goes on crease, on account of some quota, points etc.

Let me know if this is NOT the situation with this admission tamasha and I will also join the group who says ‘why so much hue and cry…..”
