Nursery admissions to kick-off with new guidelines expected this week

Hindustan Times  New Delhi, November 03, 2014

Parents of tiny tots should brace for the admission season as the nursery admission guidelines will be announced this week.

The guidelines will accommodate more changes this year, children expected to get points only for living close to the school and having a sibling in school. Points for children of alumni and for parents transferred to the city are not expected to be in the guidelines this year.

“It seems like the government has decided to do away with the alumni points all together this year. This will come as good news for parents who have migrated to Delhi,” said Khagesh Jha, who is a member of NGO Social Jurist.

Final changes in the guidelines were made over the last two weeks and they were vetted and signed by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) last week. Officials at the directorate of education confirmed that the guidelines will come out this week. Last year, the guidelines came out in the third week of December.

New guidelines

This year’s guidelines will be sparse. Only two criteria are expected to determine who gets in — distance from school and sibling. Children who live within an eight kilometre radius of a school will have a chance to get admission. Those children whose siblings also study in the same school are expected to make it for sure. The distance criterion was the same last year as well. A number of parents (AdmissionsNursery.com ) had written to the directorate, requesting it to increase the limit from 8 kilometres to 15 kilometres. The same demand has risen this year as well.

“Parents want the distance to be increased to 15 kilometres at least. In many localities such as  Sonia Vihar, Dabri, Khichripur and Chhatarpur  etc don’t have good schools within the prescribed radius,” said Sumit Vohra, who runs the popular portal, admissionsnursery.com.

What is new?

Last year, the discretionary 20% management quota was abolished. This year, the government is likely to reintroduce the provision, albeit with a number of riders.

“The management seats may only be for children of members of the management committee. The number of these seats will be small and they will not be discretionary,” said Jha.  Centralised process for children with special needs The directorate will also have a centralised application process for children with special needs as mandated by the High Court. The court had directed the directorate to reserve 3% seats in schools that have the ability to cater to differently-abled children. The directorate will identify such schools to parents and the application process for these will be centralised.

Forms should be out as soon as possible and admissions should start Nov End, so that everyone is free by new year. People would be travelling in Dec end till may be Jan mid week, hence it will become tough to follow-up.

should start by Nov end...

Hi All

If admissions stary from Nov end or 1 dec it will be good for all as many parents have vacation and off plans so they would be free by 15 dec .

So my take is 1 Dec to 15 Dec (Admissions forms distribution and Submissions )

Novembeer is good. for distance, 8 is good (shortest distance and not distance school bus takes). in areas where there are very few schools, the distance should be expanded up to nearest cluster (please note cluster and not single school) so that these parents also have choice.

and on personal note before closing:

guidelines should come early so that all litigations arising out of guidelines are settled before admissions start. in last few years especisally last two the litigations have delayed admissions considerbably and leaving parents , schools etc tense for long.

nov end for forms distribution...and fifteen days should exceed to 20 days if kilometre is 15...as parents will be commuting to far of places...

It depends on how many days will be given for registration. If it is 15 days then:-

November end : Should be the best option. (Schools need time to verify documents and for submission of fee which may even go upto 24 December. The last date of submission of fee should be 24 December only. Thereafter starts waiting list applicants. This will give sufficient time to both parties.

Mid Dec : Not suitable because of vacation planning by both the parents and school staff.

1st Jan :  Again may not be suitable for many parents who celebrate new year and part of winter vacations in different part of the world.

PS : There must be set of documents clearly listed without any confusion need to be submitted only by shortlisted applicants and that too with self attestation. No original document should be held by the school. Every school must be instructed to activate a admission helpline. Criteria/schedule and cost of registration charges must be displayed on notice board. Prospectus must not be made compulsory by the school. Every school should display scores of all applicants on its website/notice board.

Presence of parent in the draw of lot should not be compulsory but absentees from selected list for admission should not be considered in toto and seat must be offered to waiting list applicant. Details of withdrawals also to be displayed on the website under counter signature by the parent representative.

Why not from last week of December till 1st week of Jan as most of the schools are closed during that time. So schools can arrange for more staff to do the complete the admission process soon.

I agree with Mr.Ankush..that will be good.

I would say the earlier the better, so based on the dates given end of November.

How long does the whole process take?

Mam Can you direct me towards the list of schools in west, north and south delhi.

THANK YOU
