The age conundrum

NEW DELHI

: On February 15, when Kapil Sibal, Union Human Resource Development min- ister proposed increasing the age for nursery admissions from 3 years to 4 years, for stu- dents in the Capital, teachers and parents welcomed the move, saying it will reduce stress on kids.

But the initial euphoria has given way to speculation that increase in age for nursery admissions might leave stu- dents in the Capital on the back- foot vis-a-vis their peers from other states.

"If the admission age is increased for students in Delhi, then there is a need to change the whole age-group pattern for national level competitive exam- inations as well," wrote Maharam Tanwar on admissionsnursery.com, a forum for nursery-admission related issues. If a child gets admitted to nursery at 4 years and class 1 at 6 years, he will complete college at the age of 21.

Students from other states will, however, finish college at 20. This will give students from other states an edge in com- petitive exams where candi- dates have limited attempts.

Poulomi Bhattacharya, another parent, has worries of a different nature, "My son will be 3 years 11 months old when the nursery admission takes place in 2011. If the age is increased to 4 years, then he would lose out and have to apply next year when he would be just a month less than 5 years."

Child psychologists, howev- er, feel that it is a great idea to increase the age of admissions.

"A three-year-old is not ready to recognise letters and num- bers. Kids should concentrate on pre-academic skills," said Shelja Sen, a child psychologist with Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

In Scandinavian countries, children start formal schooling at the age of 7, while in Britain they start schooling at 4 years.

Research show that by the age of 11, Scandinavian children are academically superior to British children, said Sen.

"The fears of parents about their child losing out on a year are unfounded," she added.

As I was part of this discussion in this forum, I attended the "Annual Day" at my kid's preschool. Various kids' in various age-groups were performing on stage, few performing with confidence, few crying, few silent, few very active and loud. Yes there was age difference right from 3 to 4 yrs, but definitely on an average we cd see ~4yrs kids performing better than ~3yrs (few exceptions). However, expectations from teachers, parents are very high for each one of them.
End of the day I was left wondering, is 3+2m right age for my "naughty fellow" kid to start nursery or shall I wait for him to be 4+2m next year(hoping govt. enforces 4yrs norm for next year/ and also hoping that he will get thro the admissions next year).
As they say, getting admissions in nursery is difficult than IIT/Oxford, I might be forced to choose twenty-ten for admission.
But then when i look at myself, I started nursery when I was 2+9m, so I guess "All is Well" (I know times have changed).
We all can try hardest and hope of the best. :-)

Its not the fear of losing out but it is the impartial way of introducing a new scheme . In the same country I beg to differ with the cut off dates of age . We are speaking about scandinavia and Britain , why dont we see that the age criteria is so uneven in our very own Country . So do we presume that a child who is June born in some states in India is old enough and matured enough to start formal school while a kid born in the month of June in Delhi is prematured for this year's admission . Can we for once ask our politicians to look at the country and have one uniform system ? Why does something new come at a time when all admissions are almost over and not before the process started ? Is it because the school who needed their funds for this year are done with and adequate amount of donation has already gone in to our corrupt politicians and their parties
Hi Everybody,
.
I agree with Pratyush Sunita Jain.

If Govt. thinks that there will be reduction in stress on kids by increasing age of Nursery Admission,
then Govt. should implement it through out the country. Because all the children are same.
So the following steps should be taken..........

(1). Minimum age of Play School Admission should be increased to 3 years.

(2) Minimum age of Nursery Admission should be increased to 4 years...........at the same time,
Nursery and K.G. should be merged ,,,,,,,,,,as there is no need of two years study.
The syllabus will need to be revised.
( At 4+ age children generally have better Toilet training as compared to at 3+ age ).

(3). Minimum age of Class 1st Admission should not be changed.............i.e. it should remain 5 years.
( So it will not create age-problem as far as getting Job is concerned. )

(4). The point system should be again be revised so that all the children get equal opportunity.

(5). The Syllabus of all the classes through-out the Country should be same. So if a child goes to any
School due to transfer of his / her parent , he / she should not face any problem .

(6). This should be implemented through-out the country..............not only in New Delhi.

.....
I dont know what is going to be happen, Lot of confusion and many questions are in my mind
*Is the growing rate of Delhi Kids slow as compared to other sates of India ?
* If school also thinks 3 is too early why they are starting pre- nursery at the age of 2-2.5 in their school like amity etc
* Why this sudden change no other issues left for political party or any other force behind it

*If still think 3 is too early then Why cant' Nuresry and KG be compressed to one year as mostly all the kids attend the play school before going to proper school. With this all the purpose will be solved

ADVANTAGES
# kids will go to proper school at age of 4 for KG and at 5 first
# no loss of year for competitive exams for Delhi kids
# Problem of kids to get settle in 4+ will be less
# Vacant room of nuresry can be used to increase seats so less admission troubles

LOSS
# school will loose some profits
# wont be able to exploit parents
I totally agree.. The age criteia should be from 3 to 4.5 years because children of this age group become a bit responsible and they can very well interact with people around

gud initiative......but i thnk when to send a child to school and when not should solely be parents decision coz no two children are the same...each child is unique so it is the parents who shd decide when to send their child to school and not govt....rather it shd be that a child between 3 to 4.5 can apply for nursery and leave the decision on the parents
