As the season for the admission to nursery classes is approaching, many parents are cancelling all their plans for the first week of January to ensure their wards make it to their desired schools.
Most of the parents are confused and worried whether there would be any alteration in the 100-point admission system issued by the directorate of education last year. The Delhi government has started process of framing the guidelines for 2013-15 and these would be notified latest by December 17.
Sapna Malik, a chartered accountant, is worried that her three-and-a-half-year-old son might lose out in the race for admission in her choice of schools as the “good schools” are beyond the distance fixed by the government. The DoE in its guidelines had notified that students living within the radius of 3 km of the school will get 20 points at the time of admission. The children living within the radius of 10 km will have a chance of admission, but children beyond that distance will not get any weightage.
“We are very sceptical whether we would be able to get through any of the schools. The schools within the range of my house are good, but I wanted my son to get admitted in Vasant Valley School, which is far from here,” said Ms Malik, who lives in Defence Colony. She has cancelled all her plans for January to make sure her son gets admission this year itself.
She criticised the 100-point system, describng it as “discriminatory” against children from “normal” families. The government has allowed five points for physically handicapped children and for any child with special needs. It also gives five points each if both the father and mother have been alumni of the school under the alumni category.
Admissionnursery.com founder Sumit Vohra said, “We expect many schools will give maximum points to neighbourhood children, but most parents feel that even if neighbourhood gets maximum points then also getting admission without having sibling or alumni points or other school specific points is not possible.”
