NEW DELHI: The first day of nursery admissions began on Monday with parents finding a few glitches in the entire process. While some complained about schools asking for the Aadhaar card of applicants, even though the directorate of education (DoE) directive mentioned only parents' card was needed, others said that figuring out which schools accepted forms online and which did not was painstaking.

Sumit Awasthi, a parent, told TOI that one of the schools in his area required an Aadhaar card of his child."I was just looking at what all documents were required when I saw space for Aadhaar card number of my child in the form. I asked around to find out what to do next, but a while later the link to the form stopped working. Maybe somebody pointed it out to the school," he said.

Non-functional links were a problem for several parents applying online. A parent, who did not wish to be identified, said the link stopped working when he wanted to submit the form.

"I filled up the form, and wanted to submit it, but it kept saying 'cannot submit form, inconvenience regretted'. Later I shot a mail to the school, and got it rectified," said the parent.

Meanwhile, parents were also confused about the online and offline distribution of forms in schools. They said they wasted time finding out which schools accepted forms online, because that information was not given out on one platform.

"If only the authorities could make a column on whether the process is offline or online, it would save parents a lot of time," said Sumit Vohra

Parents fail to wade through maze

NEW DELHI: Confusion prevailed days after the Directorate of Education told schools on public land to await new guidelines before starting nursery admissions. Parents failed to figure out the schools supposed to follow this order as the DoE uploaded on its website a single list of all private, unaided schools, without distinguishing the ones built on public land.

Hassled parents have had to consult multiple lists before making a decision. "The list keeps changing. I noticed that they increased the number to 298. They need to release the revised list soon," said Sachin, a parent.

Sources said the number of schools on public land that have lease obligations is expected to increase because authorities are making a fresh list. This explains the increase in the number of schools on public land from 285 to 298. The revised list may name over 350 schools in the city, sources said.

Banking on this loophole, some schools have started the admission process based on last year's guidelines. "I wasn't sure the category in which a school that I am interested in falls into, so I went to inquire. School authorities said they will admit students based on last year's guidelines. It was only later that I got to know that the school was built on DDA land and had started admissions prematurely," said a parent.

Those who stay in and around Dwarka complained that as most schools in their area are built on DDA land, they are left with no other option but to wait. "There are no schools in my area that have started admissions yet. They tell me they're waiting for the new guidelines. I took three days off for this purpose but now it seems a waste," said another parent, who stays in Dwarka.

Nursery admission for your 3-yr-old? Get an Aadhaar card

The requirement is all the more shocking as the Directorate of Education (DoE), has not mentioned it even in the list of the documents required

In a stunning decision, several schools in the Capital have made it mandatory for parents seeking nursery admission for their children to have Aadhaar cards. This means that parents will now have to procure Aadhaar cards for children, some of whom are as young as three, in some of the 1,400 private schools in the Capital which are gearing up for nursery admission.

According to the guidelines uploaded by some schools which include: Salwan Montessori School, Rajendra Nagar, Laxman Public School, Hauz Khas and NC Jindal School, Rohini, among others, late on Sunday night; an Aadhaar card, issued in the name of the candidate, is mandatory.

The requirement is all the more shocking as the Directorate of Education (DoE), has not mentioned it even in the list of the documents required. Only, the Aadhaar card of parents is mentioned in DoE guidelines as a document for address proof. But despite the DoE’s guidelines, schools increasingly seem to be insisting on the Aadhaar card.

While reputed schools such as Springdales and Delhi Public School Vasant Vihar —have declared the Aadhaar card for the child is an optional document, some parents say this is not the case.

“I went to collect the document for nursery admission to DPS, Vasant Vihar. However, I was turned back as the school clearly asked for a copy of child’s Aadhaar card for registration,” said Rakesh Ranjan, a resident of Vasant Vihar.

Ranjan, who is seeking admission for his three-year-old son, a first child, added: “I called up at least five Aadhaar enrollment centres but I did not get a response from anywhere.” In contrast, some parents said they had submitted the form without their child’s Aadhaar card at DPS, RK Puram.

Some parents also complained that they couldn’t complete their online registration for admission as several schools asked for the candidate’s Aadhaar card number as a mandatory option. “Earlier in the day, I tried filling the online form of Hansraj school, Punjabi Bagh, but I couldn’t submit the form as there was a mandatory option for the candidate’s Aadhaar card number,” said Sumit Awadhiya, a resident of Punjabi Bagh. Awadhiya is seeking admission for his three-and-a-half-year-old son.

According to Sumit Vohra of admissionsnursery.com, hassled parents have thronged their website throughout the day on Monday. “Aadhaar card of children is neither mentioned in DoE guidelines, nor do many parents have it. Now parents are in a dilemma, what if their form gets rejected if they apply without an Aadhaar card number? This is a disaster as they cannot apply twice at the same school,” he said.

“DoE should immediately instruct all schools to remove this clause where an Aadhaar card is mandatory. To get an Aadhaar card requires a minimum of two-three weeks,” he added.
