made it mandatory to have 30% reservation for SC/ST. Mr Sumit Vohra, you must raise this point as well, as I feel there is discrimination in Nursery representations for SC/ST and Dalits and backward classes and minorities. All schools - DPS, Modern, Sanskriti, Amity, Bluebells, Achlon, KR Mangalam, Mother Intl, etc, etc should implement this great equaliser. And they should study for free and not thousands.
My take:
1. Neighbourhood: It is the government's responsibility to have good schools in all suburbs. All over the world preference is given to children living in the neighbourhood of say 1 to 5 kms. In foreign countries I have seen my friends buy/rent houses in the vicinity of the posh /best schools paying triple the rent/price so that their child is given automatic admission. I really wonder how many parents would be willing to relocate to colonies near their preffered schools???
Nursery child is only 3 years old and its not fair to subject such a small baby to travel huge distances. We like a really good school in Noida but are simply not ready to subject our baby to 1 hour of commute each way from Moti bagh. What happen if the school bus breaks down in high summer or monsoons/traffic jams? Or a medical emergency?
2. Sibling: It is but natural and correct in every aspect to have all siblings study in the same school. Ease of transportation, ease of attending PTA's, ease of older sibling looking after the younger one, same books, uniforms, holidays together. All schools say that they have X number of seats for general category (non sibling etc). I have an elder daughter in a school and my son is not able to get into that school because of the point system. Had the point system been there 4 years ago my daughter would have got all the points and my son too would have made it.
Girl child: With the crazy ratio of boys and girls in the North India, the government is making an effort to give importance to a girl child. My son will not get points but Life is all about what it serves you and what you make out of it. Abdul Kalam became India's best scientist inspite of being from a poor background and he made his way to the top...
Professional qualification: Well we are average parents - not PG but both me and my wife have got double bachelors. The schools where we have applied do not give points for qualifications but then where does the argument stop???? Some schools have a strict business parent selection criterea for donation purposes. Sanskriti and DPS favour government employees and in Saskriti there is discrimination between various government departments...
Alumni: All over the world again preference is given to alumni's children. Its a tradition. If a parent has spent 12 years of life in a school they will always look upon their alma mater for their children.I am from out of Delhi and my wife is from a very good convent in south delhi. Now where does my son get the points to go to a convent? I was in favour of putting my elder daughter in my wife's school (which is only 15 minutes away) but my wife was hell bent that our daughter is not subjected to a convent... So???
Intercaste marriage: we could have had 5 points for this as I am a Himachali Khatri and my wife a Jain. But this year there are no points for it?
Synopsis: I would suggest that we all should take a deep breath and continue with the points as it is FOR THIS INTAKE and whatever suggestions are to be given should be done now for next year and clear, thoughtful guidlines be drafted by July 2010 to be implemented for 2011. Last minute changes are no good and let me tell you - all these changes would benefit the schools and their vested interest. I read in the paper that Modern has been asked to disclose its points and selection criterea. Mr Vohra, have they done it? Once the admissions are over no one will even remember it nor bother about it. No body has filed a RTI for getting the answers....
Whatever rules you make there will always be a percentage of people who will find it unfair and the government has to take a stand....

ld girl, had applied to 55 schools in the hopes of increasing her child’s chances of admission.
After the first list was released, many parents have voiced their dejection with the school system. (Representational image)
New Delhi: Only good fortune can help one secure a seat in nursery class in the national capital. Or that is what Munmun Vij is forced to think.
Ms Vij, mother of a three-year-old girl, had applied to 55 schools in the hopes of increasing her child’s chances of admission. But she was left dejected on Wednesday when the first list of the selected candidates was released.
“It’s like a lucky draw. It seems applying to so many schools was not enough. I was hoping to see her name in at least one school out of the 55 we had applied to. She had the points of distance, first born, and girl child, but we couldn’t secure a seat, not even in the waiting list of the schools within a distance of 1-3 km,” she said.
Even though her daughter’s name appeared in the waiting list of two schools — Springdales in Dhaula Kuan and K.R. Mangalam — Ms Vij, a resident of South Extension, is not much hopeful.
“Her name is among 200 other children and those schools are a little far from my house. I don’t think there is much chance,” she said. For parents like Ms Vij, the only remaining options are continuing with playschools or getting admission in the NCR areas. Sumit Vohra, founder of admisisonsnursery.com which is an online community for parents, said that many parents are blocking seats in the schools in the NCR area just like previous years. However, the number of parents going to Gurugram or Noida has increased manifold this year.
Ms Vij is not alone. After the first list was released, many parents have voiced their dejection with the school system.
“A school, just across my house, denied my daughter admission in nursery because of low points — because I am neither an alumni nor does she have a sibling in that school. My girl is my first child and my son is 1 year old now. Also, I was told that if she was a single child, she would have got 15 extra points. Pathetic education system,” a parent posted Mr Vohra’s website.
Mr Vohra said that even though it has been a problem every year, this has been the worst year so far for the parents in the last ten years as schools started misusing their autonomy by formulating their own rules.
“For example DPS (Mathura Road) called parents to submit the fees on February 28 itself, even before the release of the first list. Many sought-after-schools are asking for donation openly... starting from a minimum of Rs 1 lakh onwards,” he said.
Talking about the parents, he added: “The same parents, who wanted management quota to be removed, are now eager to get admission for their child under it.”

ame is not even there is the First Waiting List of any of the schools. My suggestion is for all of us to come together and file a petition with Delhi High Court . As our kids have the basic right to decent standard of Education. Our Kids need to accommodated in a school of our locality and standard. I have decided to pursue it in Delhi High Court if any one else wants to come along he/she may contact me by sending a text of WhatsApp on 9540738302.

ointed and complain that schools have flouted rules.
The results show that on average over 70 percent girls have managed to make into the lists in many schools, while the ratio is more than 95 percent in a reputed school in Dwarka.
The list of about 430 selected children available on the website of St Thomas' School in Dwarka shows that less than 10 boys have been able to make the cut.
"There's hardly any boy in the list. Being a co-ed school it should have been fair with both the genders," said Mandeep Kapoor, who has applied in the school for his son's admission.
"If not, they should have mentioned it earlier, so that we would have not wasted out time in applying in the school," said another parent, not wishing to be named.
"My son has been selected in the school, but I am just reluctant to send my child to the school," she told a news agency.
When asked, the school's admission coordinator Neebha said, "We preferred girl children for admission into nursery classes. The few boys whose names appeared in the list were actually decided by the school management."
The other reputed schools in the city that have given undue preference to girls included Birla Vidya Niketan, Pushpa Vihar; Heritage School, Vasant Kunj, GD Goenka Vasant Kunj among others.
Experts attribute this skewed girl-boy ratio to faults in the points system being followed by schools this year.
"The roots of the problem stem from the defects in the points system. Many schools gave points separately under 'girl child' and 'first child', which have given an edge to girls over boys this year," says Sumit Vohra, founder of online parents forum 'Admissionsnursery.com'."Giving incentives to girls is not bad. But it is needed more in rural set ups not in metros like Delhi," he reasoned.
Ashok Ganguly, the former CBSE chairmen who devised the points system for Delhi schools in 2007, pointed out that lack of a uniform points system is the key reason behind this problems."Unless a uniform selection procedure is being followed strictly across the board, such problems are likely to surface every admission season," he said.
The lists released by schools in the second round had very few names, adding to parents' disappointment.
On seeing the lists containing only eight to ten names, parents alleged that many schools had not considered children who figured in the wait-listed.
"My son was in the wait-list of KR Mangalam World School in GK II. But in the second list out few days ago, there were hardly any names of children from the wait list," said Neha, a resident of that locality.
"When I demanded a clarification, the school officials said there is no rule which suggests that wait-listed candidates will be selected in the second list," she said.
The situation at the school's Vikash Puri branch is also the same, said another anxious parent Taneet Arora.
"Interestingly, the school has put up a list on its notice boards which has only 10 names and all begin with alphabet A," explained Arora, who has applied for his daughter's admission in 24 schools, but is yet to find a place for her.
Meanwhile, authorities in GK-II branch reportedly said, "We will come out with a third list only after the admissions are done. But currently we are admitting only those children whose names have appeared in the two lists."
Parents and experts alleged that several schools have manipulated the selection procedure to suit their interests.
"It appears that such schools are manipulating the selection procedure by encouraging backdoor entries with hefty donations," Vohra said."There are some schools which have given points under sibling as well as first child. How on earth is it possible that a first child can get points for being a sibling," he said, adding that, the Directorate of Education needs to take such complaints seriously.
Ganguly, however, said all the chaos and controversies being witnessed today arise from "the skewed demand and supply ratio.""The government needs to strengthen its schools to address this problem," he added.
