Separate draw for applicants with siblings in school likely

Even as the Delhi government is torn between the Centre’s direction of conducting this year’s nursery admissions through a lottery system and the schools’ demand to follow the existing point-based criteria, there is a faint silver lining for children applying to schools where their siblings are already studying.

According to senior Education officials, in case the lottery system is implemented, the schools will mostly likely have the option to conduct a separate draw of lots for applicants with siblings in the same school.

This draw will be completely independent of the draw for the general category, in which students who don’t have any siblings in that school will be clubbed. This way, applicants with siblings in the same school will have a better chance,” an official said.

Meanwhile, Education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely told Newsline on Tuesday that parents can expect full clarity on the admission process by the end of this week or early next. “We are studying the issue from all angles and hope to come up with a decision soon,” he said.

The decision to use the lottery system as a criteria for selection has come under severe criticism from parents and the city schools. They argue that the lottery system is based on luck and makes it virtually impossible to send all their children to the same school.

In contrast, the point system relies on different criteria and allocates additional points to applicants with siblings in a particular school, significantly increasing their chances.

The new rules also abolish the reservation of seats for the management and the schools are are now demanding a separate category in the lottery system for this quota as well. A senior Education official, however, said the department is yet to take a call on this.

For now, Education officials are awaiting the Law department’s advice on the definition of “random” selection as mandated by the Right to Education legislation under which the lottery system is to be enforced.

“Any decision will be taken once the Law department’s opinion is in,” an official said.

With the government now meddling with private education in this country; it is now a matter of time before private schools become third rate as the government schooling system in this country. Right to Education should not mean meddling with the limited school infrastructure in this country; but creating more schooling and educational infrastructure in the country.
Absolutely agree!
Not only creation of schools and additional educational infrastructure, had they utilised already existing vast infrastructure and resources lying useless with govt schools, situation would have been much better and RTE would have made sense. Had they shaped up govt schools and made them tough competitors to private schools, things would not have been so messed up!
With the rate individual's economic condition is improving in India, the demand for better conditions and infrastructure obviously goes up and will keep growing. Instead of improving existing infrastructure, if the govt tries to meddle with existing system, things would only become chaotic. Instead of making govt schools at par or even better than private schools, our leaders are trying to drag private schools at level of existing govt schools! Is this is the best they could think of?!
Beautiful, another quota. Let's have one quota for only girl child as well and one for only kid and please one for vikaspuri which doesn't have any good schools around. i wish to try my luck in all, i might be lucky somewhere atleast!! How crazy these people can go, it's unimaginable. They are further complicating the things.
Any idea , what's the percentage devision between sibling quota and General......
I would like to add another angle to it and request to stakeholders in case of twins ( it is applicalbe in my case) applying then how the new lottery system will able to take care since it will be nightmare if both babies gets admission in different school.

I am feeling panic after reading all these articles.

Its surprising to see why everyone is batting for siblings to go to same school.I suggest that in favour of diversity the kids may be sent to different schools.

If anyone who has gone through the list of kids selected for Nursery in MIS or any other reputed school last all the seats were eaten up by sibling or alumni category. And I was shocked by the discrimination faced by kids coming from general category who didn't had access to such quotas.

The draw of lots should be fair to everyone and therefore treat everyone equally whether having a sibling, alumni or any other criteria.

The system of continuing the status quo by some schools and a section of our society needs to be relooked.

this all confussion should be sorted out as soon as possible as we parents are already in so many dilemas about all this process to happen. so as we can settle our mind that which school to choose to purchase forms and how to go for it. please do realize our problem.......

making fool of us lottery will go on money making
another way out to retain lottery system
@ mukul ji, i don't agree with you, i feel sibling quota must be there whether in point system or in lottery, alumni i feel no need to give any preference but sibling is MUST. for parents its very difficult to cop up with two different schools, timings, holidays etc. you will also feel the same when you would come here again for the admission of your second child. i am seeking admission for my first child but feel whenever i will have another child must go to the same school where my elder child is going. no offence please:)
I think siblings should have a relaxation by means of the weightage in point system as it was there last year, alongwith the distance of residence from the school concerned (neighbourhood concept).
These two are vital factors if a point system is considered or a criteria on some pragmatic factors is made this year.
Precisely parents feel quite stress free once their both wards are admitted in the same school in terms of the ease of educating them with the similar school culture and avoiding the unnecessary hassles as mentioned by Ashima above. Further school also finds is easy to communicate with the parents in a better.
I think neighbourhood concept should also be stressed out as the kids will not have to travel so far at this tender age on finding a good school in the vicinity. There will be good heterogeneous mix of different sections of the same neighourhood society in the particular school which is required to have the kids a sense of variety. This will also reduce the load on the school as the parents will be focused on the schools within the radius of around 10 km from their residence and will not have to run helter-skelter for far off reputed schools just for sake of applying to them. Some parents may have a point against this as they may claim that there are not enough good schools in and around their locality however others are lucky to have such means in their areas. Here Government intervention is required who can invite (and give some incentives on doing so) some existing good private school chains to establish their branches in such area too to have an equitable distribution.
a quota within a quota?n where r all the general category 1st borns supposed to go?ridiculous to say the least.......
