Most of the schools will be fine with a Self-attested Xerox copy at the time of application submission.

But, it is advisable to be ready with atleast 5-6 copies of the original certificate. You will be bound to submit the original certificate with school (for seat Confirmation) after the declaration of 1st list whilst waiting for other schools to declare theirs. 

Also, check if the name of your child is on the Birth certificate or not. Many parents get the certificate made without the child name and they tend to face problems later on.
