Schools in fix over nursery admissions' lottery rule

A day after the Directorate of Education issued guidelines that would manoeuvre nursery admissions for the forthcoming academic year, the city schools have begun to worry about the impending lottery system under general category.

While the lottery system for the Economically
Weaker Sections (EWS) sees lesser applicants every year, schools have begun to hit the panic button to streamline the method of allocating 15% of seats under the general category through it.

"Even though we have been following the system for the EWS category, doing it for the general category will be a lot more daunting," said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales School (Pusa Road).

For schools, it is the execution process that is proving to be a challenge because of the sheer number of the applicants.

"If we get 3,000 forms under general category, it is not impossible to carry out a manual lottery. The applicants can also question us later. So, to make it more transparent, we will have to do it through a computerised system," added Wattal.

"For 3,000 applicants under general category, we will have 6,000-odd parents waiting for the lottery. It is logistically difficult to conduct a lottery in this case. We are new to this system and any new system is bound to have hiccups. We are now planning to get in touch with the education minister to get some clear direction on the lottery system for general category," said Jyoti Bose, principal, Springdales School (Dhaula Kuan).

Some schools, on the other hand, are not daunted by the proposition. "We were concerned about the change in the age limit for children. As that has been cleared, we are more comfortable. As far as the lottery system for the general category is concerned, we will do it manually," said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.

Yes a manual lottery system will be impossible for some 6000 applicants. Just to select some 80 candidates out of 200 applicants will consume a minimum 2 hours. Then a computerised system of random selection is the only way. Even here how come we know if schools have feeded the datas correctly or any manipulations has taken place. Moreover date and time clashes would happen since many schools will give the same dates and time for lot. Now education minister should detail the process how it can be done practically and successfully? This one of the place where analysis should be done before informing any guidelines which Mr.Vohra has mentioned in the memo submitted to Govt. last year.

Yes Lathaaji you are right ,lot of manipulations will take place.

Video Recording is mandatory of lottery but schools don't follow.

but how many school follow this

Yes it is very essential in case of lot system.

Lathaaji did you read this statement by Principal of a big school

"We were concerned about the change in the age limit for children. As that has been cleared, we are more comfortable. As far as the lottery system for the general category is concerned, we will do it manually," said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.

how she's sure about age when case is sub-judice ????????????

Does any sound come out if we clap in one hand?

Let parents drop their names personally in the box before lottery. Let the manual lottery process take three or even four hours. After all it is a matter of 14 years .. I'm sure three hours is justifiable if the outcome is fair and acceptable all around!

I concur with you anand

In many schools same process is going on. But for instance for some 6000 applicants they have to verify each one of them and need more time. Practically this 3 to 4 hours will be applicable for around 200 to 250 applicants. Moreover schools may fix same timing in different schools for lot. Again both parents and staffs responsible have to suffer. So in case of more applicants manual lot is impossible.

Sakshi and Lathaaji plz clarify whether we can take the age as 3+ for nursery or the same will be clarified on 21st Dec becoz the above article also says that schools have clarity on the age criteria

Would request u to plz provide a clear picture so that parents can plan accordingly

The case is subjudice , age will be decided on 21 dec whether 3 yrs or 4 yrs.
