The parents of children applying for nursery admission in various Delhi school under the general category claim that they are the “new minority”.
“We don't understand the kind of discrimination that is being allowed by the Delhi Education Department where seats under the general category to popular schools are so few that we have now become the new minority. There is reservation for economically weaker section, management seats, staff seats, seats for alumini/sibiling, first born and proximity from school, where does an average general category candidate fit in,” said Suresh Rawat, a resident of Rohini.
“The Government is going all out to help those from the economically weaker section, but why does it not improve the standard of the education provided at government schools which would very effectively take the stress off the few popular schools that sees this kind of mad rush each year in Delhi,” said Gigi Jose from Mayur Vihar who is seeking admission for her four-year-old daughter this year after failing to secure admission in any of the popular schools last year.
“By bringing in so many reservations what the Delhi Education Department is doing is to encourage the general category candidate to try to secure admission by any means. The schools can't be blamed for denying seats to the general category section because of the sheer number of people who apply here, but the Delhi Government should definitely wake up to the miserable condition and standard of its schools which is actually causing this problem ,” said Sneh Lata, a resident of Gole Market.
“We applied to 17 schools last year but because the general category seats are so few we did not figure anywhere, doesn't my child have the right to education which is same as a child from the economically weaker section,” questioned Ms. Lata.
Meanwhile, a senior official in the Delhi Education Department said: “This is the first time that we have introduced a common admission form for the economically weaker section to make sure that they don't have any problem seeking admission to the popular schools in the city. The schools have also been directed to send us a seat availability or vacancy report by March 31 in the economically weaker section category to ensure that the seats that are left behind don't go waste and that students get admitted against these seats.”
Sumit Vohra, who runs a popular website aiding parents seeking admission to nursery, said: “Parents applying in the general category are the most stressed out because despite applying in 20-30 schools they are not sure if they will get in anywhere. The Delhi Government has to wake up to the ground reality and instead of adding more reservation should try and improve the condition of the government-run schools.”

@Rashni , I agree with you , I feel the way we are being treated ,after 2-3 year, GEN CAT will be Minority and require reservation.
I do agree with Mrs. Gigi Jose, the govt. should improve the standard of Govt. Schools. Also the EWS category should completely be phased out and children under EWS can take admission in Schools only if condition of Govt. Schools is at par with the pvt. schools. The following suggestion can also be implemented if other parents also agree.
1. The discrimination starts from school itself, why there are points for Christianity, sindhi etc. There should not be any points for religion.
2. All schools should display list of selected students on the same day.

Yes, your are 100% correct.
Jolly Uncle
This is very correct. I am also applying in 20-25 schools for my daughter but not sure whether I would get admission any where. Also all schools have different criterions which really makes difficult to get entry in good schools.
This is really trouble some and most inefficient process.
hi can any body let me know how they distribute the management seats
Yesterday I went to Montfort School, Ashok Vihar seeking admission form for my daughter. Point system there is really surprising.
Christian Category - 35 Points
Proximity Points 1 KM - 40 Points, 2 KM - 30 Points, 3 KM - 20 Points
Rest points are with staff, alumni & siblings.
Over & above Parent's income is also being asked to mention in the admission form!!!!!
How do a general category parent actually approach for a good school??? Really disappointing for Delhi Government for not organizing things & even making it mess for general category peoples....
This govt. is so concerned about VOTE - BANKS that they hardly want to look in their govt. schools where quality of education is as good as a BIG ZERO. They dont want to improve their schools, they just want to add reservations so as to get huge amount of votes. They dont even care whether the economically weaker section society send their children to schools. They just want to mint money and play politics.
I am from General category. I scared about my children future. Now I feel that the Delhi Govt. opened small schools in colonies we send our child there and big name schools are full with EWS,SC,ST etc.
Deepak: Unfortunately, this is what has been happening in higher education as well. State toppers (first rank in Medical Entrance exam) in Chennai cannot find seats in Govt Medical colleges because of reservation. Nothing new - its just that the reservation umbrella now extends to Primary education as well
Apart from govt schools, if erratic school's management is also handed over to management of good reputed schools, situation will also improve. There are some schools whose sole purpose is to earn money and they openly flout govt norms. Such high headed schools, that only throw attitude, if are treated properly, the availability of good schools will only improve.
But alas! The govt should be such to take some steps. Surprisingly, what is clearly visible to everyone, is not visible to govt!
