Many seemed stunned, other turned away in disappointment, still others craned forward for a second look as schools across Delhi put out the first list for admission to nursery.

“I have lost all hope of sending my child to a good school,” said Aarti Jain whose son did not make it to any school for the second year. Jain had applied to 23 schools last year and 15 this year. “I checked nine schools in our neighbourhood, then I stopped looking.”

Manu Dhawan’s son also did not make it to any of the 16 schools he had applied to. “I will continue sending him to the play school he goes to and probably apply again next year.

Unlike Jain and Dhawan, Paramjeet Kaur is spoilt for choice. Her daughter Meher made it to the list at four schools, including Paramjeet’s alma mater.

Most schools had a cut-off based on 100 points. All parents who made the cut were called for a lottery, which was held in the presence of parents, a government nominee and the police.

First reports suggest that many schools preferred children with points in sibling or alumni category, a trend that reduced chances of admission of children in the general category.

With chances of a second list in most schools looking slim, authorities are urging parents to take the seat being offered, even if it is in a school that is not their first preference. “I think parents should reserve seats wherever they make it in the first list,” said D K Bedi, principal of Apeejay School, Pitampura.

Kusumlatha, whose son was not selected in any of the eight schools where she had applied, said: “I am not going to wait for the second list. The only option is to go for management quota seats. As far as I know, it will cost at least Rs 50,000 to get a management seat in small schools. Bigger ones charge as high as Rs 3 or 4 lakh,” she said.

Other parents applied to as many schools as possible, and it worked. “I applied to 25 schools for my son. He has made it at two. Though we haven’t got the school of our first choice, I am not going to wait for the second list,” Simran Kalra said.

Gautam Malhotra and his wife applied for admission of their child to 15 schools. They tasted success at two, one being Malhotra’s alma mater. But this experience has shaken his colleague: “It is so hard. After watching him worry and leave work early every evening for this, I have decided that it is better to move out of the city,” Anshul Yadav said.

Many schools withheld the list for EWS category students in the wake of the January 31 order of the Delhi High Court which laid down fresh guidelines on EWS admissions. The application process for EWS candidates has been reopened in some schools.

Despair and joy as first list of nursery admission results is released

The first list of the nursery admission results which were announced across the Capital on Wednesday brought smiles and tears alike.

Parents whose children couldn't make it to the list are eagerly waiting for the second list which will be released later this month.

'There is always a chance in the second list as many kids who are selected in various schools will create vacancies in some schools.

Hopeful: Parents queue to collect admission form on the first day of nursery admissions in New Delhi on Monday

'So one mustn't get disheartened from today's [Wednesday's] results,' Sumit Vohra, founder of the nursery admissions online portal admissionsnursery.com said.

But the dejected parents felt otherwise.

'We have tried our luck at 12 schools but have met with rejection so far. For only 12 seats in the general category around 30 parents were called for the draw at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.

'Our child's name has now appeared in the waiting list,' Priya Gupta, an irate mother, said.

Meanwhile, Delhi's education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, has reiterated his promise of providing a nursery admission for every child.

'We will ensure that each and every child in the city gets admission in the nursery class,' the minister said.

The second list is expected to be out by February 29.

HINDUSTAN TIMES | First list out for nursery admissions

As the first list of children selected for nursery admission was released by city schools on Wednesday, it brought joy to the lucky parents whose tiny tots could make the cut and heart break to thousands of others. Unable to make it in the first attempt, parents are now waiting for the
second list which will be released later in February.

Asked about the nursery admission process, education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said not a single child would be left without getting admission.

"We will ensure that each and every child in the city gets admission in nursery class," he said.

The first list shows that most of the schools preferred children with points in sibling or alumni category, a trend that reduced the chances of admission of kids in the general category.

However, experts and principals have advised parents not to get disheartened and wait for the second list.

"There is always a chance in the second list as many kids who are selected in multiple schools will create vacancies in some schools," said Sumit Vohra, founder of popular parents forum 'admissionsnursery.com'.

"If your ward got selected in a school which is not of your choice. Don't waste time, get the admission done first and then wait for the second list. The basic rule of nursery admission is to block a seat," he said.

Ashok Pandey, Principal of Ahlcon International School in Mayur Vihar, concurred and said," Parents should deposit the fees in the first school their child has been selected. If a school of their choice still has vacancy, they may switch to it later."

According to the rules by Directorate of Education, a school has to refund the fees within a month if one withdraws from it after deducting the registration fee and one month's tuition fee.

The results of first list also showed that many schools have chosen draw of lots for selecting children even as they adopted a points system.

The second list will be out by February 28 and the whole admission process, which began with the selling of forms on January 2, has to be completed before March 31, as per the DoE guidelines.

These reports clearly indicate that there is crisis in states's education system. There should be a change in the current admission process follow a centralised admission process with 100% implementation of RTE Act. The response has been to stress on interventions to improve the quality, particularly of government schools fo avoid this surplus situation.

There has to be definitely a better system for selection...... either remove the entire point system or have different criterias in the point system or some other criteria along with the point system.

Its so difficult for those parents who do not have good schools in their surrounding areas, thats not parents fault...!

hi

anyone pls share summerfield GK I result

i just dont know what to say about the system because i  am just speechless from yesterday experience. my brother and sister in law applied in for 12 schools i am not going to name the school. all i am going to say they are top rated in the cfore survey. we live in south west delhi posh area vasant kunj. now why i am speechless ? well not in a single of the top rated school have the name of their son. only one school waiting list. what in the world when i heard this ? you wont believe that most of the 7 schools are within 5 kms from our house. can you believe it ? i just dont know what to say if this is happening when these schools are within the reach of your neighbourhood. just forget about the distant schools. how come they follow both the point and lottery system. why dont they just follow the lottery where every body just get the chance ? alteast time will be saved. those points are useless where only distant or first born child you get 25 which is a common aggregate. which is the basis for the school to cut the list of those people at the first instant ? what is this a joke ? you have seen that profile photo i have put well it just prove that we have just been made freaking donkeys out of our system.

I agree with you amitabh
