Too little time for nursery admission’

Shaswati Das, Hindustan Times
New Delhi,

In just two months’ time, schools in the city will flag off their nursery admission process. The Directorate of Education (DoE) had announced last year that schools could start the process from January 2 and wrap up the process by March 31. However, schools maintain that the DoE must

reconsider the window period given to conduct nursery admissions, in order to accommodate other activities that the schools undertake during that period.

“That period is a very busy time for schools. We have to juggle pre-board exams, the school’s final exams, Board exams, as well as the nursery admissions. There must be some sort of leeway for schools because we are swamped by administrative work and that’s all we do for three months at a stretch,” said Ameeta Wattal, vice chairperson, National Progressive Schools Conference.

While schools in the NCR regions have almost reached the end of their admission process, officials at the DoE maintained that Delhi schools would start their process only by the end of the year.

However, schools still worry about ploughing through all the administrative and examination work, while maintaining that the DoE should take into account the load that schools are made to endure in the period from January to March.

“Any rigid stance should be avoided at best. The system should be made convenient for schools so that schools are free to juggle their own commitments as well as cater to the board exams, which happen during the same time,” said Lata Vaidyanathan, principal, Modern School (Barakhamba Road).

While the current academic  admission process was peppered with frequent guideline changes by the DoE, especially regarding the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) admissions, schools claim that the small time-frame given to complete the admission process can be worked around if there are no interruptions.

“We have now learned to work around the system. Even though everything falls at the same time, the winter vacations are best utilised because no teaching activity happens then,” said Ashok Pandey, principal, Ahlcon International School.

“Last year, there were several new guidelines halfway through the admission process. If those are avoided, then we can complete the process smoothly,” she added.

Yes mam starting admission from Dec 1st would be accepted by all.  1 month window period will be very helpful. Last year within 15 days window period 3 or 4 days was declared holiday by schools. So govt should ensure full 15 days excluding all holidays for issuing and submitting forms.

Yes Lathaaji i remember only 11 or 12 effective days

Interesting to see parents endorsing a "common admission test" with centralized powers with DOE. It is important to appreciate that the very reasons why some schools are better than the others is due to the empowerment and independent thinking which influences the teaching methodologies, environment and curriculum of the schools. Any action that takes decisions and ownership away from the schools and puts it in the hands of a government body is a regressive move. Instead one must trust the educators and empower them to implement the guidelines, which most progressive and aspirational schools are already doing. Placing the process in the hands of a government department will make it far less transparent, causing more anxiety amongst parents and educators and make the process lengthy with zero visibility to the parents

 Ritu, I agree with  you

But do you think lottery system is good,as point system has already failed in delhi , if your ideology does not match and you get selected in that school. Here we are just discussing about selection procedure being centralized rest no control of DOE over (independent thinking which influences the teaching methodologies, environment and curriculum of the schools)

Sakshi, I just feel once you start sharing control of something as basic as admission process, the limits slowly get pushed. We have all witnessed IIMs and IITs also being subjected to unnecessary interference at times. On lottery, My submission is that because we can't mutually agree on selection principles, should we make it into pure chance? I think we need to work on the points system some more...and then to whoever qualifies, indeed do a draw of lottery. There is no right answer and we will have to agree that fundamentally we need many more good schools and also existing schools to add capacity to solve for this demand supply issue!!

@Ritu, Point Taken but we have max difference of opinion on point system

1 RTE says Neibourhood be the key but parents who does have good schools nearby do not agree.
2 Many say no point for transfer /girl child /compassionate ground

3 Only Consensus on Sibling

So what point system can be suitable for everyone . yes i agree if tie on point system than go for draw of lots.
