The points system for nursery admission in schools is expected to remain the same this year as well. With the directorate of education saying there won’t be many changes in the guidelines for nursery admission other than the time frame, schools are looking at implementing a points system similar to the last year.
Weightage to distance, alumni and sibling are expected to dominate the points table this year as well. “We have been taking into account the directions of the HC and the directorate of education when it comes to the points system and have not gone wrong so far. This years’ points system will be more or less the same,” said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales, Pusa Road.
The school has given points for sibling (30), alumni parents (25), distance (20), minority criteria (5), girl child (5) and transfer cases (5) last year. Most other schools had similar points systems.
“There is no better mechanism to conduct the admissions fairly and we will be sticking to the points system,” said RC Jain, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association.
But for parents who have not studied in Delhi this is bad news.
“Giving so many points for alumni is a death blow to us. Both my wife and I are from towns in Uttar Pradesh and are, therefore, disqualified from taking admission in most top schools,” said Abhinav Rana, a legal consultant in a private firm.
“Alumni mean individuals who have studied in the school, usually till class 10 or 12. The RTE says no points can be given on basis of education of parents,” said Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com.

As I posted last year too, a first child do not have any sibling so there should be same point for sibling and first child. rest all points are ok but since sibling point are too high , there will be very less probability to get other admission. A school has 14 standards including nursery (as current year 12th student are still waiting for result). Let each standard has 100 student. So there are 1400 students accept nursery. Also every 3rd child in school has younger sibling. That means 500 student have siblings. Now probability of sibling in nursery is 500/13. So That means 39 students have sibling to apply in nursery. Now for 100 seats 75 are general category and in which 36 are left for others. Isn't that a very big competition. In case the sibling points, first child points and distance point are same the probability of nearer will increase which is the base reason to start point system. Also when there is EWS why is there minority system. Why still our system promoting those who are financially very much sound but still believe in getting benefits of minority cause which was actually designed to help and build up those who were ruled by social evils and now as they are established there is no need of giving them such right. EWS specifies the structure of those who are still in need of aids.
Piyush how do we justify alumni points ?
you have compared the points of sibling & first child but i think you have missed one important thing that the first child will also have the chance to get the admission in more than one school as he/she will get the points for first child in every school where he/she will apply but the child who has sibling will have no chance to get admission in other than of sibling as the child will neither get the point of first child nor sibling in other schools.
is it really fair?
i don't think
so the preference has to be given to sibling over the first child.
Dear Rakesh
In last four-five years all the parents on the forum want siblings in the same school ..so sibling has to be given preference and most schools give points to 2nd child only and not 3rd one.
So we propose with alumni and first child both getting equal points (if schools don't abolish alumni points) or 1st child gets min 15 points. but sibling points are common demand of parents !!
Really surprised and desperately unfair to see that there won't be any change in point system. DOE should come forward and rectify the flaws in point system and if DOE directs a clear cut framework regarding uniform point system for all schools, we can find a little improvement. Or else we can again see schools collecting hefty money for display of name in 1st list or convert all general quota seats into management quota since there is no good grievance cell in DOE. Many schools are not coming with the second list too since school itself transfer seats under staff, management etc and fill the seats.
Moreover alumni points should be removed. A mid-day old news confirms that alumni points are meaningless and against RTE.

It states
In a complaint filed with Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), a former civil servant Dr R Thakur has said that the allotment of points in 'alumni' category was an unfair criterion on part of the schools, and it violated the Right To Education (RTE) Act.
"As per the guidelines, parents' education or profession are not considered during nursery admissions, then why is it that schools should consider where the parents have studied from? While the parental education and profession category was removed from the list of admission guidelines, the alumni category was retained to justify the profiling of parents. The rule is unfair for government servants as they are posted at various places and it is not necessary that their children get educated in the same schools as they did. Repeated requests to provide rationale for the category have been met by stony silence from the administration," reads the complaint, a copy of which is with MID-DAY.
In cognizance of the complaint, the Commission has issued a notice to city schools demanding explanation of the criteria and compliance with the RTE. "We have already sent a word to the Principal Secretary, Education, Delhi Govt to view the matter," said X K Mahto, Secretary, DCPCR. "The contents of the complaint are serious and warrant immediate action. The Commission would like the revision of the guidelines issued by the Delhi government regarding the admission of children in recognised unaided schools in the capital," read the notice issued by the Commission.
Former IPS officer Uday Sahay agrees with complainant, "I don't understand why city schools cannot go by a simple admission criteria. It is difficult for government servants posted in different parts of the country, who are constantly being transferred from one place to another, to gain any benefit from the points allotted for the alumni category. It is irresponsible on part of the government as well to let the schools dominate such crucial issues," said he.
"Parents of kids in my extended family as well as neighborhood employed in bureaucratic services are facing similar problems of losing out on points in good schools due to the alumni criteria. As majority of reputed city schools have allotted 20-25 points to the alumni status of parents, it has become a rather tough situation for parents," said Rajender Kumar, Secretary, Health, Delhi Govt.
Dear Lathaaji
Same thing i have being telling the school lobby from years if a person is alumni that means he is educated and you cannot compare him with uneducated parents as per RTE .
This is indirect profiling that school are doing ( they come to know that what alumni family background and know they can extract money also easily ) !!
@ Ritu
I agree with you. Last year at Springdales, Pusa Road, every second student, at Vasant Valley, Vasant Vihar, three in every five and in Modern School, Barakhamba Road, two in every five students admitted in the general category was from either of the two criteria(sibling or alumni).
I agree with Piyush. Sibling should not be given high points. It is actually putting the general category at a disadvatage.
How are we to put the first child in school if existing parents are going to corner all seats.
@Ravi, Sibling and Alumni are given more or less same points . so what points you think should be removed. As for parents sending 2 kids to different schools, different culture , different school timings , different school holidays. lot of complications if one child goes abroad for student exchange program and other one in simple school might develop complex. think of working parents etc etc. Most of the parents with single child concurred
Tomorrow single kid might have a sibling also . we have to reach at conclusion which is acceptable to everyone like Mr Vohra wrote Min 15 points to first born if sibling gets 20-25 or first child points = Alumni
Sibling and first child cases should get same points
