Cases of child abuse rising in Ghaziabad schools

2 kids molested in I’puram school

Both are three-and-a-half years old; 25-year-old caretaker arrested

GHAZIABAD: Two pre-nursery students — both three-and-a-half years old — were allegedly molested by a caretaker of Mother’s Pride school in Indirapuram in the national capital region. Police arrested the school caretaker, Sher Singh, on Tuesday.

About two months ago, the driver and conductor of a school bus were arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a six-year-old girl student of DPS, Vasundhara.

The molestation case came to light on Tuesday, when one of the children refused to attend school. When her mother, who happens to be a teacher at the same school, enquired, she said the caretaker had molested her and a classmate during recess.

The girl also told her mother that the caretaker had done this quite a few times and warned them not to mention it to anyone. Twenty-five-year-old Singh has been employed with the school for the past three years.

The victim’s parents claimed to have reported the matter to the school authorities on Tuesday morning and were assured by the school authorities that immediate action would be taken. But they alleged that the school authorities did not report the matter to the police till late evening.

Gorakh Nath Yadav, station in-charge of Indirapuram police station said, “We have arrested the accused and booked him for molestation. Police will investigate the role of the school authorities in the matter. Both students have been sent for the medical examination.”

He added that police investigations were underway and they were questioning Singh, who would be produced in a Ghaziabad court on Wednesday

The molestation of two pre-school children by a school caretaker on Tuesday is not a one-off incident. Of late, there have been several such instances where the security of children have been compromised in schools. But the police and administration seem helpless in the prevention of
such incidents.

In September, a six-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by the driver and conductor of a reputed public school in Vasundhara. The incident had led to a huge public outcry. Due to public pressure, the school authorities had finally admitted their mistake.

An inquiry had also been ordered by the district administration into the incident. However, the girl’s parents  withdrew her from the school as they were not assured of child’s safety.

“Such cases are on the rise. The administration has to ensure that all kids, especially girls, are safe in schools. There is no fear of police among criminals.

School authorities must also be held responsible for the incident,” said col (retd) TP Tyagi of the Ghaziabad RWA Federation.

Acting swiftly, senior police and administration officials have already ordered an inquiry into Tuesday’s incident to be conducted by the district’s basic education officer.

“The inquiry will bring out all facts. If found guilty, action will be taken against school officials. We will also seek an explanation as to why no female caretakers were employed for the children,” superintendent of police (SP) SS Yadav told Hindustan Times. Police sources said that the accused has admitted to his crime.

Revealing more into the incident, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prashant Kumar said though there were reports about two girls being molested, only one girl’s parents had filed a complaint.

“If anyone has more complaints, they can freely approach the police. As of now, there is no need for the girls’ medical examination,” the SSP added.

Shambhavi Atrey Very Valid Points .

very valid points by Mr. Atrey ... but how to convert these views in action... we as parents cannot just sit and writing or views.. someone has to take the initiative and take the lead ...... to give a strong message to school authritites for taking necessary steps to avoid these kind of incidents.. i fully agree with Mr.Atrey.. that parents should be given full freedom to go to school.. anytime whenever they want ...as they are our children and not their source of income... ..
Male staff should be removed specially where these innocent creatures are there...
we send our childern in the school for their bright future and not for spoiling their lives with these kind of heinous and disgusting act .

Mr. Sumit please take the lead in conveying the message to the school authorities

@Rama , You know why these problems come because no parents wants to take the lead.

There are more than 4000 schools in Delhi and NCR.  EACH SCHOOL SHOULD BE REPRESENTED BY RESPECTED PARENTS AND STRONG PARENTS ASSOCIATION SHOULD BE FORMED.

Well said Sakshi Mam. Parents pay a huge amount of fees and they should make a strong force and fight for their rights and child safety related issues, the main concern any parent will look into.

Yes, Mr. Sumit should take the lead please....

i think you r right.. we all can write our fear our views but no action after wards..

In what way this forum can help ?.. alteast conveying to the media for highlighting the issue of lack of security for schools in gaziabad specially the indrapuram area...

This is really disgusting and a scary fact. The school authorities should be responsible for every girl child in the school. They should ideally employ more women instead of men in co-ed schools. All the men employees should be police verified. The schools charge so much, why cant they employ more women staff for taking care of the girls. The criminals should be hanged for such offense. This is strictly unacceptable. The parents should meet the school authorities to force them from preventing such offences from happening. Until and unless parents show their concern, the schools will be least bothered, am sure.

@ Sudipa

Well said.

i would like to add a couple of suggestions to mr avdhesh's list.one that is usually followed is to have an ayah in the school transport till the last stop.
Also schools should preferably employ females as support staff
and strictly forbid entry of male employees in the areas used by kids.
also schools should thoroughly check backgrounds of people they are employing.
the first step to avoid these things is that the schools should accept that they can happen anywhere and everywhere.

@ Surina

Identification and background of employers should be verified and they should be asked to give 2 references too.

Parents its really disgusting to expect everything to be done by Mr.Vohra. Parents should fight for their kids in the school with a strong force since serial incidents happen from the same school and few years back same thing happened in Dwarka branch too.
