Pvt schools can run double shifts

But Some Fear It May Lead To Time Crunch, Impacting Teaching & Learning

Manash Pratim Gohain TNN

New Delhi: Directorate of Education has issued the Delhi Gazette-Extraordinary Notification for second shift schools paving way for private schools to apply for running a double shift.
The notification came on October 25 on the heels of a Supreme Court order stating schools be allowed to run a second shift as per guidelines prepared by Delhi government. The guidelines for the second shift were framed by Delhi School Education Advisory Board set up by the government. DoE sought the Election Commission’s approval before issuing the notification.
Schools run only by governing body or society or management will be allowed to apply for a second shift and these will be an independent, “new entity” that will maintain separate records and accounts. These schools will share infrastructure but will have separate sets of both non-teaching and teaching staff, including the principal.
While one school of thought is that this will ease pressure on schools and let
more students avail the opportunity of studying in “good private schools”, others are saying there are many challenges. It is feared that the teaching-learning process will be impacted by time constraints and extracurricular activities will take a back seat.
The petition for two-shift schools was filed by The Indian School and, based on a Delhi high court order dated March 2011, it had admitted 68 students in the afternoon shift. According to chairman of The Indian School Prafull Goradia, quality education is in short
supply and many parents and students would be benefited if quality private schools are allowed to run a second shift.
However, principal of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya Anuradha Joshi said, “This will dilute the character of the school. Our school runs up to 5pm. Ho
listic education will suffer as we simply don’t educate students; only force them to learn.”
While agreeing that there will be hardships, Usha Ram, principal of Laxman Public School, who was also a member of DSEAB said it “is in the larger interest”. “Schools have to redo the planning, but it can be done as there are schools running in double shift.”
“No way are we going to compromise on the quality. The second shift will rather have a better student-teacher ratio. At present, it is 30-35 in the morning shift. There are so many seeking admission. During nursery admissions, there are more than 300 parents ready to come for the afternoon session,” Tania Joshi, principal, The Indian School, said.
Terming the step as “good in principle as more students will get the opportunity of quality education”, principal of Springdales, Pusa Road, Ameeta Mulla Watal, said, “There are major challenges. Students of second shift will go home at night. A better proposal would have been to run teacher training colleges in the afternoon and schools being given a pilot run.”

No it is not beneficial and recommended having two shifts for children schools.

Dear All,

Just now went through the article published regarding schools running two shifts. At first instance itself, I felt that this whole concept is of no practicality since it will involves so many things like :

a) Insecurity of children

b) Few good schools will be flooded with children & rest will have literally no or very few students

c) Mental & Physical growth of children will be badly affected

d) Complete imbalance in teaching quality

e) It will be more of a call centre philosophy for children which is already taking its toll on so many young people nowadays

f) For schools its an opportunity to earn more while using already existing facilities or addition of just small investment

g) Children will get confused when to study & when to play which will make children loose their focus.

h) Bigger schools will have their monopoly

i) Yesterday itself i ready in HT that lot of college students had to give their semester exams while sitting in corridors, labs, halls etc. which is totally ridiculous & one of the way to see what may happen in case we go ahead with above referred option of 2 shifts in schools.

I would like to have a view of others too in this regard just to understand if my views are alike to other parents too.

All are requested to express their views in this matter.

At the same time,I would like to confirm that these are just personal views which may vary from person to person & not to offend any school in particular.

Thanks.

Evening shift in a way is a goods option as we are into a 24 X 7 working atosphere so this will suit most parents schedule.

The only drawback i see is it it has any connection with out body system which we get to know later which might be related to kids growth system.

Sumit sir,

The same reporter of TOI had published the same news last year, (doing rounds in oct-dec 2012) and incidently the heading is also same. It is repackaging. Very poor instance of journalism. Shame on the reporter.

There was no coverage of news of DOE notification on EWS changed criteria by TOI

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-12-20/delhi/359329...

Media is falling in its standard and sadly a once strong pillar of democracy is also weakening as is evident from Tarun Tejpal's Tehalka of Tehelka....sorry for off the topic comment.

@Shikha,

If that's the case then I really wonder about the santity of this news even this time ....lol

HI Shikha

I agree with you its a repeat news but if see both the news/links,My observation (i could be wrong) last year it was just decided by Advisory Board  in principle but finally notified by DOE recently.

Yes last it was just decided by advisory board which goes for approval and it  is not  the final confirm decision. When DOE put Gazette-Extraordinary Notification that is approved by LG  .Moreover this is not normal notification but Gazette-Extraordinary Notification .

Dr Rashmi you are correct.

Poor reporter couldnt find a topic for the news and used the same heading.

Can anybody clarify whether the it is 25th october of 2012 or 2013

As per http://www.edudel.nic.in/upload_2013_14/282_286_dt_01072013.pdf

DOE is to upload all gazette notification on its site.

If anyone could locate the notification being referred in the news then pls share.

I checked this link where notifications are loaded http://www.edudel.nic.in/welcome_folder/gazette_notification.htm

Hi,

Whatever may be the case, but this whole concept itself is should be scrapped. As in no way any parent will agree to send their children at such a late timing to school & even if someone does, then it will surely have a major impact on children's psychology a lot.

Yes, news reporter are also helpless & may try to find one or the other news irrespective of how much truth is there in the same or how much beneficial is it for anyone.

In case schools are so serious about increasing the capacity of admissions, then why not plan for more schools instead of trying out double shifts.

@ Hariharji, I concur with you and most parents would.

VR Hari and sakshi

I am of opinion that there are adequate number of schools but the basic problem is the OUR (Parents') psyche as majority of us would line up for the "Branded" schools. The moment a Branded school's management opens its branch (Chain or Franchise) it gets the legacy aka branding of parent management. We get so blinded and rush for that Francised outlet of education and turn a total blind eye to school that may imparting better education in our neighbourhood.

@Shikha,

You are right it happens to as lot of parents run behind branded schools & thats just because they feel they will get the best in those schools only. So surely parenst will have a major role in this process. Now, that's the reason government should try & ensure that better facilities, education, brand is available at every school irrespective of government or private. For this government should take initiative & should prepare a kind of checklist with basic facilities, infrastructure, rules, policies, procedures to be followed by each school so that even parents gets the idea that all schools are almost equivalent even if not 100% same.

You may see that in today's world noone wants their children to study in government schools. It does not means that those are the worst schools but the brand has become so low and reputation is so poor that it results in that kind of thinking in parents mind.

Its no surprise that "The indian School" or "Laxman Public school" are supporting this idea as they are again as kind of bussiness house in which anyone can check how many EWS category student are studying even as on date. I was just wondering if the management of "The Indian School" will have same thinking if allowed to run on this idea and only EWS category students are admitted in their school for that particular year..... lol...... surely they will change their mind.

I infact concur with Latha Manavalan's view point of PPP model of schools which in a way enhance the quality of schools, facilities and improve the quality of education in almost all schools.

Idea of double shift in schools will surely affect children, parents, teachers and in a bigger way the complete society.
