The minimum age for admission into nursery classes in the city should be increased to four years from current three, according to a consensus evolved at a meeting of school principals and parents, chaired by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday (February 15). The minimum age for admission into class one should be six years, he said announcing the consensus that emerged at the meeting.

Sibal said he will write to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider implementation of the decisions. Pre-schools like nursery and KG should be delinked from formal schooling system, it was agreed, Sibal said. Non-formal schooling should have separate infrastructure which will help in de-stressing children, it was agreed.

New Delhi, Feb 15 (PTI) In a step aimed at reducing pressure on thousands of children and their parents, the minimum age for admission for nursery in the Delhi schools may be raised from three to four years.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal today held a meeting with principals and parents where a consensus was evolved that the minimum age for nursery admission should be four years, while it should be six years for Class-I.

The minister will write to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider its implementation.

According to Sibal, "The consensus was that the minimum age for nursery admission should not be three years.

It should be four years. Admission into nursery system at three years adds emotional stress to the child when he should discover the world.

good, good, these issues have to be aken into consideration.
After all this, are we liable to apply for nursery next year as well.
FINALLY........ A good news after a long time.......... Sibbal ji has finally started thinking.....For the good......
We always abuse them for not doing anything, this time they deserve some praises.... Its just a proposal but it means a lot to us....
Yes 4+ is the right age for nursery....
Good going...
N even i think that they should be encouraged on this subject.... These people should know how glad the parents r for their this decision.....
Sibbal ji ki ho gai wah bhayee wah.........
This move is welcome, also i think those who did not get seat this year will get a chance next year also and one can even think of changing the school.
Totally Agree, Thanks to Dr. Sibal. All the school management should look into this and CM should issue an Notification.
i also 100% agree
I commend NurseryMom for thinking differently and bringing out another aspect of such change. Her concerns seem to be valid and should be addressed.

Personally I think NurseryAdmission at 4+ is good step but we should also think of late career settelment. Mr Rahul Gulati's recommendation of removing KG should address this issue.

Late career settlement is matter of concern. Few professions like medical require MD, DNB, SuperSpeciality etc etc. Delaying admission step "as-is" would further delay their settlement which even now takes longer.

Even for other professions, with MBA becoming so common now a days, its matter of time that further higher studies beyond MBA become a norm. Career settlement will get delayed for our kids. This aspect also be given thorough thoughts.

On the positive note though, late career settlement may be better in a way that late settlement would reduce family size (hence much needed population control). Just trying to think laterally.

nurserymom ,

Lots of economics !!!
i am shocked with the analysis done by you.....u seem to be worried more for india`s economical growth rather than ur own child`s growth..
our kids are innocent buds and should be allowed to bloom at their own sweet pace...
Are you aware of the no. of cases where 10 and12 yr.olds are committing suicide for not being able to bear the performance pressure.
Its high time to think differently .

Child entering Nursery at 4+ will complete XII by 18; Graduation by 21 and MBA by 23........

justified...

We're mocking west does that fit in the Indian context. We're a different identity; our problems are different.

And BTW the West today is facing the highest medical cost crisis - one of the reasons is a high number of retiring baby boomers and their tax payers starting careers pretty late...

We're are going to land up there in a few decades if we don't plan now - and America will sustain because they have the monetary muscle power, with our appeasing foreign policies we will need some thinking and long term strategy to sustain... add the neighborhood threat constantly hovering on us from all sides... we can't think like america...
What about the kids who are already 5 yrs and going to 1st standard.my kid is march born he is nt even 6 and going to first standard moment he wiull be 6 he will go to second .and because of this facing lot of strees ,,,good the rule has come up but very late
I am not agree with the proposal of Mr. Sibal. If Hon. Minister think that the 3 yrs. age is not sufficient for proper schooling of kids then why it was considered as earlier it was 4 yrs. Now when parents have accepted the system of govt. to put their wards in the school at 3+ yrs. now again the same government is proposing for 4 or 4+ years. With this, there will be differences among the kids as well as parents. In my case, this year I got admission in school for my dauther who is 3+ and now she will be in Nursery class. If govt. consider the age 4+ for Nursery then the question is that in next year in which class my daughter will go (as per present system, next year she will go to KG) and it is proposed that KG should be abolished and the age of kids should be 6 yrs. for Class-I whereas my daughter will be 5+ for Class-I. Like me, other parents will suffer the same thing so those parents have to decide the same whose kids are admitted this year in Nursery class. Plz think over it and government should take the decision keeping in mind all the situations.
Yes the age should be 4 yrs. what they can do is to combine nursery and pre-nursery. Children today learn a lot thru parents before going to school. So one yr can be reduced.
