The minimum age for admission into nursery classes in the city should be increased to four years from current three, according to a consensus evolved at a meeting of school principals and parents, chaired by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday (February 15). The minimum age for admission into class one should be six years, he said announcing the consensus that emerged at the meeting.

Sibal said he will write to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider implementation of the decisions. Pre-schools like nursery and KG should be delinked from formal schooling system, it was agreed, Sibal said. Non-formal schooling should have separate infrastructure which will help in de-stressing children, it was agreed.

New Delhi, Feb 15 (PTI) In a step aimed at reducing pressure on thousands of children and their parents, the minimum age for admission for nursery in the Delhi schools may be raised from three to four years.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal today held a meeting with principals and parents where a consensus was evolved that the minimum age for nursery admission should be four years, while it should be six years for Class-I.

The minister will write to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider its implementation.

According to Sibal, "The consensus was that the minimum age for nursery admission should not be three years.

It should be four years. Admission into nursery system at three years adds emotional stress to the child when he should discover the world.

I also Do agree with the age criteria , but it should be more formal , Clear understanding should be imparted to the school & Parents .

But There should be also solutrion to the present Admission Process , where lot of children has not got admission. This one of the most important issue which also should have been taken into priority on this meeting .
I hope they follow this new age (4+) criteria... Already there is a lot of course in class 1, carryforward sums, spellings, tables... let there be little carelessness in our li' le once...:)
there is a lot of confusion. I hope there a blog by DoE to make it very clear.. How many classes before class 1 and at what age?
4 yrs for nursery is welcome change for sure.
Thanx to Mr Sibal, m grateful that he thought for the child who cant even speak properly cant take the burden of nursery.Above all i had applied in 7 schools and could not get admission in one school also. what am i suppose to do. leave my govt job and go back to my hometown or leave my child uneducated. where is mine or my child's fault
I reciprocate the views of our dear minister .the right age for admission to proper schooling should be 4yrs.the playways have become a must thesedays and if the age criteria for schools is 3yrs then for the playways its 2 yrs which is really too early. poor kids they've lost their childhood coz of this ugly system.
With age limit increased to 4..... what is the pros-crons.... will scholl at GGN. Noida and Fri'baad will follow the same.????

then next year will there be no admission...?? My son will be 3 on august 2010 so as per law he won't be joing school in 2011 instead he will join at 2012 at age 4.8 ...will it make sense...isn't too late for him.

don't know guys I'm confussed... this nursery admission is a night mare for me... I was never nervous in my boards... the way I'm right now... I'll go mad... :-)
every decision by the govt will have its pros & cons but ULTIMATELY it would be the parents who shall have to bear the brunt of the indecisiveness of the govt. one year the govt. thinks 3 is right, next year it thinks 4 is appropriate. Is there a respite for the parents who have overage kids ............SRI RAM???? but are they giving admissions to all overage kids?? NO??? Has govt. found out the answer to the chaos it created last year. WHAT if it changes it mind & says , lets stic to 3 yrs for XYZ reasons . Who is the end sufferer.......GOVT ??? WHY CAN The govt. not do anything for altering the syllabus.???? A child in nursery class can be 3 yrs or even 3 yrs 11 months . What about parents whose child gets admission in nursery when he is nearing 5 yrs....???? Age may not be always a solution why not do something to revive & change the education system .......... . EVEN if it a 3 yr old going to nursery or 4 in KG or 5 in 1st class . why not design the syllabus/grading / sores etc. accordingly. No matter what class , there has always been a pressure of studies. WHy creating unneccesary confusions...... gvt. cd. have waited for parents to settle down with nursery admissions & then announce this for the next year. .......... but may be parents have many more surprises for the next year!!!!!!!!! All rulings, statements, notices, guidelines are implemented during the admission process & for rest of the year ,the authorities sleep. Nursery admission is yearly process so why not have standard policies , why a need to change it every year ..... It shall still take a few more years ( looking at the current pace & ruckus) to the policies & the system to standardize. Phewwwwwwwww.....................
I agree with Neharika, The age should be 3.5 to 4.5. The cut of should be 30 Oct as it will balance between the march born and April born children. Children born between jan to march as mentioned by Neharika and children born in April to june will have much difference. So we should also discuss all this before we agree on proper age for nursery.

Personally I feel as far as academics is concerend even four year olds will have a lot of pressure.... but pushing the age up will help benefit all since parents will not have to worry about basic care for their kids at school, teachers will have to spend less time handling cranky toddlers and the children will have fewer traumatic moments of getting wet in school and not being able to communicate simple demands and problems.
My grudge is why us??? The only thing I wanted for my Jan born is more time before she goes to school... for my own peace of mind at least.... unfortunately our kids and the two batches before will end up being the same age as their juniors and always grappling with study pressures esp since with this new change, in the long run curriculum will also be designed in accordance with 6+ in First rather than 5+ in First.
Yes, children born in April will have one year plus. They will be almost 7+ when they will enter in 1st. So this should also be taken care of.

What about the kids who are already 5 yrs and going to 1st standard.my kid is march born he is nt even 6 and going to first standard moment he wiull be 6 he will go to second .and because of this facing lot of strees ,,,good the rule has come up but very late
It is a great ruling if implemented. It relieves the dear children from a lot of stress that they have to go thru.Poor things start going to pre-school at tthe age of 2 -2.5 when they cant even express themselves properly.
But I am confused whether this rule applies to the schools in NCR as well??Ny idea??
And what is the age criteria throughout the country? would Delhi students be at par with the children from the rest of the country when they apply to Engg,Medicine and other competitive examinations after finishing school.
i also agree. this can not only make strong base of children help them to be grow up more confident.
Any confirm news on age change from 3yrs to 4
