reply to Ravi - Regarding Springdales 8 Km distancecalculation
Springdales is a wonderful wonderful school.
I read the discussion on Springdales DK posted by Ravi about kids from sector C, Pocket 1 not been included in the draw on 21/Feb/2014
but kids from Sector C, Pocket 3 beig included.
I really tried hard to explain to school authorities that Sector C1 Vasant Kunj lies within 8km.
There are few points I would like to share:
1. The distance from school to home in 'sector C Pocket 1 Vasant Kunj' is 8 km but the school wants distance on google map from 'Home to School'.
2. The walking distance from home in sector c, Pocket 1 Vasant Kunj is 7.7 kms.
3. When we put any home address in C1 Vasant Kunj, google map heads to a point indicated as C 1 Vasant kunj and takes the exit gate near C1 Mother Dairy and head to Nelson Mandela Marg. This distance is 8.1 or 8.2 kms.
4. But when we take the other gate to exit sector C1 Vasant kunj, the gate where sector C1 and C2 are joined,
the distance decreases close to 7.5 km or 7.7 Km, well with 8 km. This gate is also equally used (if not more) and is as prominent and well known by residents as the other gate.
But, to do that, we plotted the point of our house by zooming down inside the Sector C1 colony.
Now, when the point is selected, google shown address in 'from' feild as 'unknown road'.
The school authorities want the address to show there and not 'unknown road'.
Pls note that there are 2 ways to calculate distance in google maps, either enter addresses or if it doesnt find the desired address correctly, then simply zoom down and select the exact location on the map. But this is not acceptable to school authorities.
But, in India all interior and by-lanes are not named so it shows 'unknown road,But the point plotted on google map is correct and within the colony!
But I guess the school did not accept this as I did not get a call for the draw.
5. Google map shows right turn on "Rao Tula Ram Marg" is prohibited.
But when I drove to the school, I found that the second cut under the flyover was open.
The GPRS tool for Nokia maps shows that right turn on "Rao Tula Ram Marg " is allowed.
This turn reduces the distance to school significantly!
6. There is even an exit gate in Sector C1 Vasant Kunj by 'Sarveshwar Mandir' that takes one directly to Nelson Mandela road and that distance is well within 8 Km range. But google maps does not show that gate!
7. My car meter reading showed approx 7 kms.
8. using aerial distance map, sector c, Pocket 1 is well within 8 km zone.
I hope the correct distance is used. Springdales DK is a wonderful school!

This should be considered. You should lodge a complaint with DOE. Ideally schools should consider radial distance as that's the acceptable way under RTE act.
DOE has given a option to school to either choose Radial or road distance. They could have gone for uniformity here at least.

Are there other similar cases with Springdales on this forum? My guess is that many applicants have been left out by the school on their distance criteria and are not even aware about it. Only one response so far has confirmed receiving a call from Springdales. Many others, most likely, are rejected and not even informed!

Hi Ravi, I just read the discussion started by you on Springdales Dhaula Kuan.
We are in Pocket 6, sector D, Vasant Kunj and we haven't got a call either for the draw of lots on Feb 21st. The School to Home distance is 8kms by the Google Map. But the School wants Home to School Google Map which is 8.4kms. However, the actual on-road distance is 7.8kms.
Is there anything we can do about it? I see that Ms. Lathaa Manavalan, has suggested that we seek information through the RTI Act. What information will we exactly be seeking in this case? Does a school have such wide discretion in deciding the distance criteria as per the DoE notification?
Are there others too in similar situation as ours? Please guide/ help. Many thanks.

HI .. I am in the same boat .. Sector D6 , vasant kunj ... have neighbours whose kids study in Springdales DK ..Pls suggest next course of action .. RTI has a min 30 days response time

Ashna, why don't you send a written complaint to DoE, with Cc to the school principal and AN.

@Ravi - Have gone to DOE office have complained with regards to other school. As Spring dales does not fall under our neighborhood, you will have to do the needful yourself.

Please help advise where is the list of the eligible girl child for the draw, as each school puts up a list first and I cannot see anything on their website. Yes the draw is today but we have not heard anything from the school..............maybe I am also in the same boat being from C-8 vasant kunj, but please advise how did you all get to know that they were not considering this under 8 km. Thanks.

My case is also same. We are from IUAC which is exactly 8km by google map and radial is around 6.8Km. We went today for draw of lots for girls as they mentioned that for girls draw they will follow radial distance. but they did not allowed us to enter in the school as we were not the comming in the 8 Km criteria. We just wanted to talk to principle about this issue and they kept us on waiting for almost one and half hour after that they said principle will not meet with you people whether you give your complaint in writing or go to court.
