STATESMAN 10 MAR Parents are requested to read comments first and see last 3 year history and then comment
I feel we Indians have a peculiar problem of getting into blame game.. Right now I am doing the same by blaming everyone :)
When the admission criteria was announced, no one uttered a word and everyone went ahead and filled applications.. As the results dates came closer, each criteria was discussed and everyone had his or her version for each criteria (obviously as per individuals comfort level). Bottom line is everyone wants the criteria as per his or her liking.. We have created the mess and not the government. At the end it is some or the other kid in question and someone will have to accept the fact.. Rules can't be customized as per everyone's liking.
Will just park few thoughts (For reference):
1) Neighborhood - I stay 20 KM away from DPS RK Puram or Vasant Kunj? Should I file a case on grounds of equality and my right etc that I should also get equal chance to get admission in this school and all other reasons? Many more reasons for each parent.
2) Transfer - So one who has spent entire life in Delhi, should they shift to other states for admissions as migrants are getting additional points? Many more reasons can be given.
3) Alumni - I wonder if it is the fight for very good 'popular' schools or average schools.. Will anyone raise questions for normal schools?
4) Siblings - Basis arguments discussed on Forum of dynastic etc, Alumni makes it dynastic but sibling doesn't for future?
What I feel is everyone has their own versions depending on their fulfillment of criteria.
What's disappointing is we have created a mess. It is the shortsighted parents who wake up when they find their kid may not get admission in this list and few parents supporting such issues.
AS A PARENT WHEN THE CRITERIA WAS ANNOUNCED, WHERE WERE THESE PARENTS TO RAISE QUESTIONS?? NOW WASTAGE OF 1 MONTH IS TAKEN AS 'NOT A BIG DEAL' FOR SOME PARENTS.
I have also applied for 20 plus schools and have not got admission for my son anywhere. But this mess created by SO CALLED INTELLECTUAL PARENTS is not taking it anywhere..
AND I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THE COMPETENCY OF GOVT WHO ARE MAKING RANDOM DECISIONS..
IT MAY HAPPEN THAT THE WAY OUR GOVT WILL ISSUE NOTICE THAT THOSE WHO DID NOT GET ADMISSIONS ANYWHERE WILL BE GIVEN ADMISSIONS IN THE BEST SCHOOLS OF DELHI... :)

We are just making a MOCKERY of this whole admission process. Especially those who are making a Hue & Cry over Sibling & Alumni points.
The parents can take ALUMNI points only in one or maximum of 2 schools. This is justified and has been in the system for many decades now. Moreover, this system is being followed in most of the countries throughout the world.
For example, in USA :
Legacy admissions — giving children of alumni preference in the admissions process — has a long history in American higher education. Kids often follow their parents to the same school, frequently applying with the hope that they'll get a favorable look. Example 2 : Waolani Judd Nazarene School, 408 N. Judd Street,Honolulu, HI 96817
http://www.wjns.org/#/admissions/faqs
Are any students given priority in the admissions process?
Yes, students who have siblings who currently attend WJNS, whose siblings or parents are alumni of WJNS, those with parents who are currently employed by WJNS, and students whose parents regularly attend Honolulu First Church of the Nazarene or another local Nazarene church are given preference in the admissions process. (These individuals are not automatically admitted, and must also follow the necessary admissions process.)
Secondly, ofcourse as a parent, it is better to have both children in one school. So, the sibling points are totally justified. This too is practiced throughout the world.
REQUEST PARENTS TO SEARCH THE NET AND FIND THE PRACTICE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
PLEASE STOP THIS AND LET'S MOVE AHEAD WITH THE ADMISSION PROCESS. WE WOULD BE WASTING SO MANY PRECIOUS DAYS IF THE SESSION STARTS AFTER THE SUMMER VACATIONS.
Hi Shweta - Let me introduce myself as someone who ALSO is making hue and cry for 'Alumni' points (i personally am in agreement with the sibling point).
Just as a personal opinion, we need to look things in context. What holds true and good for 'The USA" should also hold good for Delhi? May or may not. Why? Coz the context changes.
Delhi is the 13th highly desity city across globe with 11,050 person/Sq KM. Whereas the fist city from USA is Los Angeles at 90th place with density of ONLY 2750 person/sq KM. LINK. Same ways, USA has a better student to school ratio.
I am most intrigued by the last part regarding waste of so many precious days. As a father, I really don’t ever feel that s/he is wasting any day or the ‘precious days’. The schooling may not be there but she surely is learning something or other every single day, not necessarily the bookish things but in a more childlike manner. As a I somewhere on this thread said, to me, this is not a 100 meter dash but start of a marathon of the lifetime for both kid and parents. Few days makes the difference but not as much as rest entire schooling years, if that moves in wrong direction.
On a lighter note, I appreciate your optimism to compare Delhi schooling to non-other than USA schooling, even after all this. Or, where you subtly sarcastic to them?
Dear Tarun,
As we both are educated and seem to have a fair access to the resources like the internet, I would just like to point out a few things:
1. The population density of any city has nothing to do with alumni or sibling preference given by a school. As you have rightly mentioned, USA has a better student to school ratio. The problem lies with the number of available seats for the children of Delhi and WE ALL KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. Still, none of the parents (including me & you) approached the HC or SC to direct the city government to allot land for more schools in so many years.
2. We all knew about these guidelines from December 2013, Why there were no hues & cries about the point system then. WHY ALL OF THIS NOW??
3. I feel that there is nothing wrong with any school giving preference for patronage to the school. This happens everywhere in world in every field.
It is not about my child or your child getting admitted in the best school or the preferred school, it is about a fair, rational & transparent system. According to me, the present system after quashing of the inter state transfer points seems to be just that. Any hue & cry over any issue now seems to a selfish approach rather than a fight over injustice and equal rights.
Hi Shweta,
Thanks for understanding the real crux of the problem rather than beating around the bush like many parents are doing. Its natural that someone will be against X criteria or someone against Y.
As you can see this discussion is leading to nowhere and at the end you will be surprised to see responses which is taking a simple honest concern to a different level altogether.
As I said EVERY PARENT IS TRYING TO PROVE THEIR POINT and that is the problem. Trust me, if you do a survey of parents you will end up having infinite no. of criterias. But as I said everyone has to prove HIS/HER POINT.
I am disappointed for not getting admission for my kid in any school but what disturbs me is the way government and parents are reacting. Trust me if it goes like this 2114 is when the admission MIGHT start for this session as still SOME INTELLECTUAL PARENTS have to file a PIL for distance criteria. At the end parents might demand for fresh guidelines, go through the process again and again get into PILs. After all parents can't judge what will happen after criteria is announced but only after seeing the results. vicious circle.
This is an unending discussion and that is why I stopped replying on this discussion.
Right now my focus is on getting admission for my kid. All the best to you.
Rgds
Hi Shweta,
Let me assure you that I am not this much selfish to keep on others life on hooks so that my objective is met. And, even absolutely have the same thinking around fair, rational and just system, which to me is a situation where it looks fair, rational and just to most involved, not to a handful.
#1; In a way, we agree that the USA driven argument may not be the way forward.
#2; Why the cry now - Fortunately, I tried to share my viewpoint somewhere on this thread itself. LINK. Yet, let me try to put it bit differently, would you not raise a voice, may be not a full blown hue and cry, but a moderate voice, if say (and I sincerely pray that this not happen) you become victim of any criminal offence (again, I pray this never happen)? By this argument you won’t since so many crime are taking every single minute and you have never raised a voice. The crime is there since long, you also are around for equally long but yet, you raise a voice when you are pushed to a corner.
#3. On point #3, you have a freedom of speech to find nothing wrong in quota/point system etc or even someone may be right in thinking that even hefty donation is absolutely ok. But by the same freedom I beg to differ. Period.
I Agree with Mr. Tarun
Well said
Pain comes to a patient not his attendants or onlookers, only the patient knows exact flux of pain.
similarly everybody have there own problems, question here is was the playing field level, or my child suffered because of my not being alumni of good school.
finally this is Delhi not USA or anywhere else in the world and as per me kind of problem we all are into is unique. So demand of solution also has to be in tandem.
.
Comparing Indian system with USA is not correct here. You have to abide and adjust yourself to the requirements of a particular culture and so we are trying, nevertheless, success seems to be far away.
