Hi Sakshi, Sanjay,
Since we all are looking actively for the best school to get our child admitted and some of us has a wishlist of top schools in our minds, so I am asking few questions regarding the schools and the education pattern.
Let us compare top 3-4 schools-
1) DPS, 2)Somerville, 3)FAS, 4)new age schools (like step by step, Genesis), 5)Others (it might include Amity, BBPS, Khaitan etc).
A- What is he student teacher ratio.
B- What is the academic pattern? - example- I have met ne of the guys in my society whose two kids are in DPS. according to him since DPS is a renowned and most sought after so they follow a very rigid curriculum, whether the student is able to understand or not, but everyone has to follow that. Also they give lot of homework to do even at this small age. Is this common for other schools also?
C- Parents Teacher interaction- Exmaple- the same guy told me that since they are almost like number one (atleast as per him) so their attitude is like "either my way or highway". They will only let u know what they want to impart. Is this same with other schools.
D- Overall Child development- I am sure more or less every school is good in this on papers. But what is the actual scenario for each of these schools since one wrong decision can make or break a child's future. More importantly how do these schools fare when it comes to preparing the base of any child. They should not fear studies, rather they should enjoy it. And school/teachers play a major role in this.
I would highly appreciate if someone can give us some thought on these points as they will cover and will explain most of the questions that is appearing in every parents minds.
Any discussion from anyone else is also welcome.
Hi Mithun... I too am a DPS parent. My elder one is now in class 2. I beg to differ from the opinion of the parent in your society. Let's answer point wise -
1) Student teacher ratio till now has been 35 children : 2 teachers per section. Most traditional schools have this ratio. But yes new age schools may be having lower ratio
2) Curriculum is fixed but easy and slow paced in Nursery and Prep. The youngest ones in class too pick up momentum by mid session in nursery. Not too much pressure and homework in Nursery Prep. Infact child feels grown up and a sense of achievement and pride in finishing the homework given. Studies pick up pace from class I onwards. This is for DPS...Sommerville has more homework burden than DPS. In Amity, children who arent picking up at the desired pace are called for extra classes. Lotus Valley gets homework finished in school itself. So new age schools may be differing in homework load but i feel children enjoy doing schoolwork with their parents.
3) It depends on issues being raised in PTMs. Teachers give a vivid feedback. Some parents however expect the same treatment to the child as given in playschools. Traditional schools dont encourage spoon feeding. So sometimes parents expectations are not met, but to be frank sometimes these expectations are a little too demanding. For example, tiffin issues are hugely brought up in nursery. Parents expect teachers to check if each child is finishing his/her tiffin. Now that wont be happening. So sometimes conflict in expectations are there.
4) Lastly, I feel we parents give too much weightage on school. Like you rightly said, every school has overall development on paper. And it is largely followed too. The syllabus is same. Activities are same. Schools that are more renowned and have more students, have more competition. So its tougher for a child to stand out from the crowd and prove his/her mettle. A small school will give more opportunities to children to excel. So every school has its pros and cons. But a child who has calibre will shine anywhere he/she goes. How else do children from defense background adjust so beautifully in different schools and yet excel in life despite sometimes having to do education from remote areas. Moreover I feel, more than schools and teachers, it depends on us parents if the child enjoys studies or is afraid of it.
Thank you Sanjay.
That was nicely answered.
We are from east delhi Mayur Vihar. We have filled forms for Khaitan, Bal Bharti, DPS. Do they school give less preference to students outside Noida. I thought they provide buses to these areas and they should consider them equal as east delhi is next to Noida.
Rohit
It's school specific but preference is given to Noida Candidates.
DPS Noida take admissions from Delhi also.
Hi Sakshi,
