Submit nursery admission rules, DOE to schools

City schools may be required to send their admission criteria and basic points system to the directorate of education (DOE) by the end of the month. The schools, DOE officials said, can prepare the criteria and send it to the directorate before the release of admission guidelines that are not expected to change much this year.

“The guidelines have been prepared after a lot of deliberation over the past three-four years. They have been changed according to the orders of the high court,” said Amit Singla, education director, Delhi government.

“The present guidelines give autonomy to the schools while ensuring that there is no discrimination against students. Any big changes in the guidelines should not be expected,” Singla added.

A suggestion to centralise the process of application using a system as the one used by Delhi University is also under the scanner for the upcoming admission season. Experts, however, have dismissed the suggestion as “unworkable”.

“The schools are private and autonomous. We can’t dictate terms to them. In DU, the colleges fall under a centralised system and that is why the centralised forms work well,” said a DOE official.

School principals agree. “Every school will have their own criteria. Some schools give points to vegetarian parents and children. A centralised form will not be able to accommodate all these choices,” said RC Jain, president, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association.

Another criterion under the scanner currently is the upper age limit. According to last years’ guidelines, the minimum age limit for a student to get admission in nursery is 3+.

There, however, is no upper limit. Some schools give preference to students who are a little over four years.

The matter is currently sub-judice and the DOE will come out with guidelines on the same once the matter is decided.

The guidelines are expected to be out by the first or second week of December.
