Points vs address dilemma

NEW DELHI: "I'm in this boat this year," says radiologist Sujeet Datar, who is seeking admission for his daughter in nursery.

Nursery admissions always cause an inordinate amount of stress in parents but this year, things are worse. Parents start girding up for the process months in advance-get paper work in order, research schools, and in some cases, even move homes-but this year, they can't do even that. Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung is yet to decide the process for nursery admissions-essentially the points system-as the high court directed him to do in September.

"If the present system continues, I'm fine. But if they switch to a combination of neighbourhood and lottery, I'm in trouble," he says, "Every year, there is confusion. It's annoying. These matters should be resolved well in advance."

The points system has already been challenged in court several times with education activists arguing that any 'category' beyond distance is not permitted by the Right to Education Act and constitutes "screening".

"The points system favours one set of parents over another," says Divya Sood, graphic artist. Sood is based in Chhatarpur and unless "some brilliant school suddenly comes up right next to Chhatarpur", she'll have a very difficult time. Originally from Shimla, Sood will not get any of the points earmarked for siblings or alumni.

A distance only criterion is problematic for parents wanting to send kids to 'brands'-as admissionsnursery.com's Sumit Vohra puts it-as the distribution of private unaided schools is not uniform across the city. The closest one to Sood is in Vasant Kunj.Parents are asking questions on an hourly basis on Vohra's site. "Most think even if they get maximum points for neighborhood, getting admission without sibling or alumni points won't be possible.

Parents who don't have schools near their homes are most hassled as in either of the systems-points or distance-lottery-they won't stand a chance," he says adding, "Some parents are waiting for criteria to be out for documentation because if lottery comes, first child/girl child affidavits might be invalid."

Priyanka,

No admission criteria out for 2014-2015 and every year the forms start 1 Jan.

Wait for 17 dec picture will clear and from last 3 years add starts from 1 jan

Mr.Sumit Vohra has raised a very sensitive issue regarding distance criteria as distribution of private schools is uneven and unsystematic in Delhi. DOE should consider this and come out with some flexible approach so that all parents get equal opportunity for admission of their kids.

Hi, Sometimes back I read that some schools ask for Voters ID card'and passport as address proof. I am from GZB and shifted to DWARKA about an year back. All my documents bear the ghaziabad address. Will the rent agreement not considered as the address proof?

If not, than what should I do? Also, my daughter's Birth Certificate is from Noida. I hope that will not be an issue.

Sidharth,

B.C is not an issue

But some schools might not accept rent agreement,Getting Mtnl phone installed wud will solve the purpose.

Thanks a ton Sakshi.

I am in the same boat. The process is discriminatory - alumni, sibling(what do people do in case they have one child- helping the population woes of the country).... needs intervention by the government....

These schools should not be allowed to have pre-school/nursery, otherwise why have separate pre-nursery/ school (i.e. upto KG)

In case they do not have pre-school, they can have more seats for people by having more sections in the place of pre-nursery.....

Deepak

Wait for new guidelines,no school in delhi except amiown has preschool.

Please let us know what would be the final criteria for nursery admission in schools-its high time now and we are worried. Transfer case points, alumni points- this  system of evaluation is very biased for few kids over others. I feel a very justified system of admission should be thought over which would be equal for all the parents.
