Classrooms empty but schools are paying teachers, maintaining infrastructure

Their children may not have started school yet but parents of tiny tots are having to worry about their school fee already.
SONU MEHTA/HT FILE PHOTO Schools in Delhi will soon close for the annual summer break in the second week of May. Children will be able to start classes only in July.

The children may start nursery classes in the coming week, or what seems more likely, after the summer vacations, but parents will have to pay the fee for the entire quarter.

And it is not the fault of the schools either. While children usually start school in the first week of April, the long-drawn litigation has meant that classrooms have remained empty so far. The schools, however, have not stopped paying their teachers or eliminated the infrastructure that comes along with running the classrooms.

After Monday’s deferral, the final decision on the nursery admission process is expected on Wednesday. It is only after that that schools will start the second draw of lots to fill up the vacant seats. While a few schools have started classes already, a large number of seats still remain vacant.

The second phase of the admission process is likely to start by the end of this week or early next week. Schools usually close for summer break in the second week of May. The children, therefore, are expected to start school only in July now.

“This is a very peculiar situation where we will have to pay the fee even when our children have not started school. My daughter is still in play school and if the school demands the entire fee, I will have to pay double,” said Amit Yadav, a resident of Rohini.

According to the directorate of education, they have not yet decided on a road map for the fee.

“We are focussing on getting the admission process started as of now. Even when we discuss the issue of fee, we have to recognize that schools are still paying the teachers and are managing the infrastructure. We will have to think about the issue after proper consultation,” said Padmini Singla, director, education.

One more blunder by DOE.

Can anyone  tell me how many parents have roughly deposited fees in private school on HC verdict by 9 Apr ?

With media reports schools are trying to juatify the first quarter fee .... they are just creatting a a hype and want to take advantage of the situation

@Dr. Anjali, This mess is because of the HC order on 3rd April and stay by SC on 11th April.

@Mahesh, Schools will always justify their actions. In-fact, human tendency is to justify his/her actions and say wrong to actions done by others. Don't mind...

Yes @ankush you are right everyone try to justify there actions... but an individual do this is a different thing and an institution doing so is a different thing coz there actions affect the millions

Why Padmini Singla is giving this statement? Has she ever spoken something like this for parents. Is there any vested interest lying. As a matter of fact she should compensate to schools from her salary.
She is the priem reason for this mess now she is giving ideas.

I agree with Mahesh and Kanika

Itz like giving advantage schools before SC verdict .
And now when this idea has already been given to the schools and highlighted, they will fully turn it in their favour.
What about kids who still dont hav a seat and are waiting for second list for admissions? Will they pay fees starting July?

On the one hand People say education is not a commodity and on the other they don't want to pay the fees. It is not like butter or eggs that you pay only when you get them .

By this logic one should not pay for summer vacations also. It does not go like this.

We have to pay the fees and should pay it. Teachers are employed with the school full-time and are ready to teach and its not teacher's fault that the session has not started. Teachers salaries have to be paid.

Please don't make an issue of a single quarter of fees out of possible 48 quarters which your child will spend at the school.

@ Amit the point here is not avoiding paying fees but why the DOE is givig ideas. Also I understand you are eager because of your DPS alumni seat and want to ensure the session to start not even considering the mess normal 70 pointers are going through.

I don't have any DPS alumni seat. I am a Mere 70 pointer who went to High Court against transfer frauds. You are mistaking me for someone else. You should delete your comment.

@Amit I sincerly regret my comment about you, i was scrolling for ur comments and derived that conclusion about another Amit who gave the statemant that I am happy that I am able to save my alumni seat after HC judgement. Sincerly regret.
