Parents question unusual point system in nursery admissions

GURGAON:

Absence of strict regulations and a regulatory body for nursery admissions is taking a toll on parents even before the procedure begins in Gurgaon.

With schools slowly announcing nursery admissions, parents are irked by the unusual criteria set by some schools. Questions are being asked about the point system followed by schools. Some schools have allocated points to defence personnel, civil servants, parents with special achievement and professional expertise.

“Seeking admission in Gurgaon schools can be a nightmare. The point system differs from one school to the other. Rules are absurd and the staff is rude if you question them,” said Aakansha Gupta, a Gurgaon resident.

Experts felt that this can be an indirect way of screening children and their backgrounds. Last year, several schools had come under the scanner after they conducted informal interaction with the children.

“Indirect screening comprises of any procedure through which you can select the students and parents. Where will the children from ordinary homes study? Many schools call children and parents on the day the results are being announced so that they can interact with the children,” said Sumit Vohra, founder CEO, admissionsnursery.com

“We have kept points for the professional expertise and achievement of parents because we have a strong programme where the they give career advice and even teach senior students. The parents who are applying to our school are highlighting their job profile,” said Savinder Kaur, head (primary), Salwan Public School, Sector 15.

“We have been following the point system and for us the major criteria are neighbourhood distance, sibling and alumni,” said Anita Makkar, principal, DAV School, Sector 14.

Distance, sibling, 1st born (be it girl or boy) should be the only criteria. Rest will lead to choas and anguish among the parents. Let their be uniform point system across the country. Point for any other criteria like Transferable job., special needs, single parent etc. ought not to be included.

Only three:-

Distance

Sibling

1st Born

Yes Sevekram  I agree with you 100%. It seems you have done deep study but why not special needs. I m doctor and believe  me I daily see parents and children.

Dr. Amita, govt. has issued notification to all schools regarding immediate appointment of special educators and inception of appropriate facilities w.r.t. learning disabilities. If we consider spl need as a criteria, it may affect adversely psychologically the child that I have been considered because of my dis-abilities. Similarly other criterion will come up like single parent etc. Anyway this was my personal approach.

Yes. It sounds valid. U mean some quota or fixed seats. But not in common points. Makes lot of sense. I second you sir.

Mr.Vohra has rightly said. Any type of screening procedure used in profiling the parents esp. regarding occupation and professional qualification should be strictly prohibited. What does parents with special achievements mean? Schools do not specify this field and include any doctorate, persons with superior ability or talents, any awards they received even community level awards. Is it not a direct screening procedure adopted by commercial schools. Gurgaon district education Board should take action against screening procedure handled by the schools.

I disagree with the statement of HM Ms Savinder Kaur. We have seen in the past and present as well experts from different fields being invited by the schools for their various events like annual day, investiture ceremony, Earth Day, Mothers Day, Grandparents Day, Teachers Day etc, etc, It is irrelevant and illogical to link professional as a governing criteria for small kids, who u never know will be more expert than those being considered now.

There should be a complete ban on any kind of screening other than the three criterion. These three are well justified by majority from various sectors. Therefore, the government should formulate such kind of regulatory policy on the subject. Non-adherence of the same must lead to de-recognition and closure of the school. Punitive action is mandatory for violators.

Sevakranji
