WE SUGGEST ALL THE PARENTS MUST VISIT THE SCHOOL BEFORE GETTING ADMISSION AS AFTER GETTING ADMISSION NOT MUCH TIME IS GIVEN TO DEPOSIT THE FEES (EXCEPT VERY FEW SOUGHT AFTER SCHOOLS )

Hi Sakshi,

Please suggest which school to select out of 4 mentioned below.

1) Nursery class in Shiv Nadar (around 12 km from home) - Not getting good vibes - looks to be over hyped

2) KG class in GDG (but 15 km from home) - Seems to be too far

3) Nursery in KRM (around 8.5 km from home) - Is it really a good school?

4) KG class in GEMS (just 1.5 km from home) - Seems to be a mediocre school.

Really confused which one to choose.

Arun

KRM has mixed feedback and does not belong to Birla group (as some people think) Belong to Delhi based group.

Yes Gems does not have much positive reviews

Does GDG bus comes near your home as its quite safe per parents feedback with all safety measured (As you save one year )

GDG bus comes to my society, but only worry is the travelling time of around 1 hr (one side) daily - it seems to be very hectic for 4 year kid considering Gurgaon roads/traffic.

I almost finalized SNS in my mind, but didn't get good vibes in FunDay interaction today. I was expecting some orientation, but they didn't share anything about school/infrastructure/teaching methodology (just nothing). However, people in my society are giving positive feedback of SNS.

 Arun

SNS is also sought after

so its your  final call

Dear Sakshi - Thank you so much for all your help on this forum. Today we decided to go with Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon.

For the benefit of parents who'll seek admission to these schools in 2017-18, here's my two cents on the Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon Vs The Heritage School debate...

I too went for the SNS "Fun Day", post which I went to Heritage. Got through Heritage (so I guess, SNS yesterday and Heritage today sort of makes up for not getting Shri Ram). I found the Heritage folks trying too hard to sell themselves and not really giving very convincing answers to the questions that some of the parents asked -- the answer to every question has the "experiential learning" term in it. Here's an example: Question - How to you ensure that kids do not feel entitled given that they belong to privileged backgrounds? Answer - blah blah blah experiential learning, blah blah students ran their own health check-up camp. That was the trend with nearly any question they fielded.

However, the Heritage admission event was meticulously managed and I might be an exception but I would rather have an educational institute be indifferent (like SNS' fun day) than be the way Heritage is. However, that's not the reason why we are going for SNS. We talked to a lot of people whose kids are in both the schools and based on how happy they were about the experience we realised SNS is a better option. Here's what goes in favour of SNS vis-a-vis Heritage

1. Faculty - many ex-Shri Ram teachers are in SNS Gurgaon now including the principal Ms Monica Sagar (she's supposed to be extremely good). I've heard very good things about SNS teachers and their pedigree. In today's interaction at SNS faculty, I found their teachers to be better than Heritage (but the interaction was fleeting so don't take my word for it)

2. Timings - for a nuclear family where both parents are working, SNS nursery school finishes at 12:30 PM, that gives the kid a chance to get to a daycare, eat lunch and sleep off in the afternoon. Heritage finishes at 1:45ish which means the kid will reach a daycare at about 2:30 and have lunch by 3 (that's late and leaves little time for an afternoon nap)

3. Number of students and teacher student ratio - Heritage has 8 sections of 30 kids each (240 kids) vs SNS that has 5 sections of 25 kids each (correct me if that's wrong). Given both are promoting experiential learning (less focus on syllabus and textbooks), I would go with a school that has lesser students and a better student-teacher ration given that experiential learning (I hate myself for using this term again and again after the way Heritage folks abused it today) would need a combination of excellent teachers and a lot of teacher student interaction for it to really work in an environment where there is no "relative" assessment (competition does drive people to do better and in both schools we'll see very little of it in the beginning since there are no tests or relative scores).

Would love to hear from other parents on this.

Best wishes,

Siddharth

Siddharth

Heartiest Congratulations and God Bless Your Family

Thanks for your kind words:)

One thing i would like to add Heritage has got proven track record rest parents can share their thoughts for  healthy discussion.

heritage has two teachers on 30 students....SNS has two teachers on 25 students....so its nt a big difference.....bt i feel the infrastructure of SNS is better specially for Junior classes....like wash rooms etc in comparison to heritage

Congrats Siddharth!

I also heard good feedback about Shiv Nadar from 2-3 parents. They told me all good things about school. That's the reason I applied for only two schools SNS & Shri Ram but got selected in SNS only.

Things were going good, but I got anxious when admission process of SNS failed miserably. Then my interaction with school/travel desk today didn't get well. They haven't shared anything about school formally - not even a school tour.

School asked parents to share each & every detailing in admission form, but didn't bother to share even a single slide on school & it's methodology.

How can I validate if school principles are aligned with my ideology? That's the only concern I have with SNS. Otherwise, all positive feedback from SNS so far.

Thanks, Arun

Hi Siddharth,

Thanks for this detailed assessment  of Heritage vs Shiv Nadar, I am sure this is going to be very valuable for parents next year!

Just wanted to share my experience with both these schools as well (unfortunately my understanding is the opposite :)), understandable because of limited interactions (only time will tell :)

Infra : I believe Heritage is ahead of Shiv Nadar

Acads : Heritage is the outlier here after DPS with 90%+ avg Class XII for 2 successive years (i was under the impression that its an old school, but the teacher told me that the 2015 Class XII batch is just their 2nd or 3rd batch, so that puts them in similar age as shikshantar)

This is amazing because one of the Frequently Asked Concerns (FAC) with progressive / unconventional schools (Heritage & Shikshantar) is acads (yes being CBSE might have helped them :))

SNS yet to prove this (I am sure they would as in our country managing board exams is not very difficult)

Desperation to promote / get students :  I would say this was the second lowest at Heritage (of course after Shi Ram, they don't need to care about managing their brand / admissions :), I was disappointed with Shiv Nadar (initially it was in our top 3), i guess we all would appreciate it does not need genius to manage the admission process...

If you think about it, today we all knew what we had in our hands and by keeping this today (after all results are out), Heritage was not forcing us to make a decision (without knowing any of the results), this is highly appreciable!

At SNS, first the farce about 200 only applications, then not having the back-end infra (i can understand Flipkart failing with million hits, but SNS with 600+ hits?), then being generous and allowing all to apply (wow!), then putting the refund goodwill, then allowing waiting list nos up to 275 (railway WL from pre-flight days? 275 for boys and girls separately, overall up to 550), I don't see any sense in any of that...and this when all schools know how anxious parents get, SNS just kept adding on...

Behavior by Staff / Teachers : I was impressed by the meticulous way they handled today's admissions process (hats off as they managed the entire admission process in one day, that too on a Saturday, not having multiple stages / multiple tours / multiple document verification dates etc, i am sure we would have visited most other schools more than once). I found Kaye Jacob, the Principal at Heritage, very likable (of course early days and u get  to know as you go on), Hope she sticks around for a few years more. Also i did not find any of the teachers giving the school tour to be desperate or snooty. so was super impressed (yes it was their day to impress the parents, so could be orchestrated :) , only time will tell :))

Hope my 2 cents helps parents for 2017-18

Regards

Kritisundar Paul

Hi Kritisundar,

Thanks for adding to this. I have a few points to add -

Acads - Yes, they (Heritage) have proved themselves there. However, it would be interesting to see how many students opted for Science Vs Commerce Vs Humanities (a data that of course is not shared with the parents).

Desperation - I think it was a commercially smart move to wait till the results for other schools are out. Here the logic is a little longer term, all the schools (e.g., Scottish High) who have closed admission earlier will have several drop-outs and they will be trying to fill in these seats with waiting lists or otherwise till the 2016 session begins (so many of them will be doing admissions till next year). These schools have earned some extra money in lieu of the uncertainty of not being able to fill seats. Heritage avoided that today but they didn't stop there -- they organised the "selling" (read admission) process so well that a majority would buy into it and they would get all seats filled in a day -- a brilliant move that makes morse sense than running after a few lacs. If you noticed, the school's owner was managing the process while the principal looked more like a figurehead who came in to make that "flashy" presentation (again, I might be wrong but it did seem that way).

best wishes,

Siddharth

Kritisundar Paul

Agree with your assessment of Heritage.

Just to add. I thought Heritage is taking a lot of pains to explain the philosophy and how it is different from usual school techniques 'coz they really want the parents to be aligned to the philosophy. I know a couple of parents @ heritage who are happy but also confirm the difference in methodology.

The principal Kaye Jacob, of course, comes out as a key strength to the school and i also hope that she sticks around.

On Shiv Nadar - I thought their conduct of the lottery process was the most transparent and the best i have seen. Get all 600 parents together, take out everybody's name in an order so there are no second guesses about the process. Great Process.

But they didn't talk anything about the school, infra, methodology etc. and didn't allow any tour. I hope the confirmed parents got to know much more during interaction post lottery process.

No, Shiv Nadar has not shared any information about infra, methodology to confirmed parents.
