Hi Sakshiji ,

I personally think that in the long run , commuting distance from the school to the place of residence matters more than the reputation of the school particularly if the difference is not substantial. The ability and hard work of the child matters more than the flambuoyance and environment of the school . So atleast in my case I would be happy to settle for a school that is near my place of residence even if it may not be the best ; as long as it is decent and does not carry a bed reputation.

So Distance criteria should be the most important and hopefully , is the sole criteria employed by the schools this year..............

Then it will be draw of lots ..not acceptable to every parent ..as they might not get school of their ideology.

65% want 'first child' to be major criteria for nursery admissions

alt Fareeha Iftikhar | Fri, 2 Dec 2016-07:50am , DNA

With nursery admissions 2017-18 round the corner, as many as 65 per cent of parents in the Capital want 'first child' to be the major criteria to secure admission, a recent survey has revealed.

The online survey was conducted by the website admissionsnuresery.com, with a sample size of nearly 2,200 parents. The 'first child' criteria emerged to be the most desired one for nursery admissions in Delhi.

Generally, schools take other criteria into consideration, including distance, if the child has a sibling in the school, or if anyone in the family has been an alumnus. Parents seeking admission for their first child have expressed concern of missing out on seats in good schools.

"Most of the old, established schools go by the 'dynasty rule', and allot points to alumni and siblings. It is very important that alumni points be replaced by the 'first child' points in order to give others an opportunity to secure the seats," said admissionsnuresery.com Founder Sumit Vohra.

Of the 2,178 votes exercised, 65 per cent (594) parents wanted 'first child' as the major criteria, 60 per cent (550) demanded 'distance' criterion to carry at least 50 points, while 37.5 per cent wanted 'girl child' to remain a major criteria.

"I am seeking admission for my first child and I really want him to get into a good school. Neither have I studied from any school here, nor do I have a good school near my place. Only the 'first child' criterion can help my son get admission to a good school," said Jahagirpuri resident Sneha Tiwari.

As many as 30 per cent (286) of the parents did not want 'distance' to carry more than 50 marks, and 20 and 17 per cent voted for 'sibling' and 'alumni' as criteria, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has drafted a set of guidelines for this year's nursery admissions and sent it to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung for approval. "The government has been pushing to make 'distance' aa the major criteria and trying to scrap unnecessary points that create hurdle for parents at the time of admissions," a Delhi government official said.

Indian Express - Delhi: Some schools say plan to link proximity and admission impractical

The government has called a meeting of stakeholders Monday.

Written by Mallica Joshi | New Delhi | Published:December 3, 2016 3:15 am
delhi, nursery admission, delhi nursery admission, delhi high court, delhi hc nursery admission, delhi govt nursery admission, delhi aap govt, delhi news, education news, india news, latest news This year has seen the highest number of rounds of admissions for FYJC seats so far.

The Delhi government’s plan to ask schools to admit all those students who live close to the institute first may run into trouble with some schools calling the move “impractical”.

According to them, the move will lead to chaos and unfair distribution of students. The government, however, said it is only making sure schools follow promises they made at the time of getting land at discounted rates.

There are close to 1,700 private schools in Delhi. Of these, 410 got land at discounted rates from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). For 285 of these 410 schools, DDA had laid down the condition in their allotment letters that they would first admit students from their neighbourhood and then others.

Watch what else is making news:

The Supreme Court, in 2004, had asked schools to follow the agreement but it is yet to be implemented. A petition brought this to the notice of the Delhi High Court, which asked the Delhi government for its opinion. The government said the condition laid down in the allotment letters will have to be followed, thus telling these 285 schools that neighbourhood will be the first admission criteria for them.

School managements and principals, however, have said the move is problematic. “This move will only create confusion as a few schools will be forced to follow this directive, while the others will be free to create their own admission criteria,” said the principal of a prominent private school.

Others pointed out that some schools might have problems filling up seats since these are not located in residential areas. “For schools such as Modern School, Barakhamba, where will you get students in the middle of a commercial area? We want to meet government representatives and discuss these issues. We want an amicable solution,” said S K Bhattacharya, chairperson, Action Committee for Unaided Recognised Schools in Delhi.

The government has called a meeting of stakeholders Monday.
